Triangular garden with small depth borders - NEED HELP

Hi there,

My brother and I are coming to the end of a big 18 month renovation of our first house.

The garden is the last of our tasks (See in images).

Current thinking is to utilise low box plants with some scented climbers to provide both cover for the fences and some lovely scents. However, we are pretty novice at this so looking for expert advice!

South facing facing garden.

Have had a feed installed below the block work so can have uplighters installed to add an extra touch.

(Excuse the weeds and mess, they are next on my list for tomorrow!)

All of your sound advice on what to plant is welcomed!

Something at the end for the path to go to?

A covered seat at least, possibly summerhouse?

Climbers would be an excellent idea as they tend not to grow outwards as much as shrubs. Lovely scented climbers are Honeysuckle, Star Jasmine (evergreen), Climbing Roses and Clematis. I don’t think there is much room for underplanting, so I would stick with small perennials such as hardy Geraniums, Aubretia, Erigeron and Alchemilla mollis. Box is quite formal and will need regular trimming. Unfortunately they are also prone to Box blight which has affected some areas in the UK but not others - worth a google! You could also place something of interest at the end such as a statue/piece of art or a water feature.

I've got bamboo in a big half whisky barrel planter. If I remember rightly the depth was the bigger issue. I would steer clear of runners though it will escape. Even a clumping bamboo will need digging a splitting on a regular basis otherwise the roots will damage the wall. If you like the look of bamboo have a look at Nandina it's a nice alternative but a bit better behaved. Failing that I'd go with a mixed border and climbers to disguise the fence.

It's a great plot size and a lovely sunny position. The mediterranean look is all about stonework, planters & Pots. Have a two tier patio. The bottom layer straight across with a circular fronted second, higher level back left. On the top layer you could have your lounging area and water feature in the background. Coming forward a nice dining area for the late evening sun. Improving the fences is a must, the trellis to the left offers no privacy. The fence at the back may be salvageable. Replacing both would be better. You can also paint the fences to add colour in a pale blue maybe or white. White especially will show up terracotta wall hung planters and pots, whilst giving the plants and flowers something to 'pop' from.

I would personally forget about painting the fence. Not because I like the orange, but because I'm lazy and I would rather invest my time and money in plants and soil (improvement of) and big planters or raised beds if you're going for that. If you plant climbers against the fence, most of it will be hidden anyway. And if your plants get larger, they will hide most of the fence too. I have solar powered lights in my garden and they give a lovely atmosphere at night. Mine are from Ikea. I have fairy lights along a fence and different kinds of lights that you can just put anywhere you like. Would be lovely to dot some lights around in your garden too.

Very tidy garden, but it just needs that “something” doesn’t it? How about creating an Islamic style garden? All about water and tranquility with lots of straight lines. You could add a bowl shaped water feature or a fountain in the middle, with a path leading up to the fountain, and then leading to the borders behind it. Water fountains are very popular now and they usually come complete with a fountain and a long lead, usually 32 feet, with a plug at the end. I have an urn shaped one and it was so easy to set up. I would also add more shrubs and flowers in the borders, although I realise not everything is out yet. You can use the same paving you already have or go the full Monty with colourful tiling. Hi there. If it were me I would have made the borders much wider and gone for a different shape for the path. The current one only emphasise the triangular shape and make the space look narrow. It's probably too late but circles work well in a triangular space. They trick the eye into broadening the space. Using shrubs and trees will also give a vertical accent. Joanne

Hi there,

Thanks for your feedback so far.

The block work was installed early on in the project along with the artificial turf so will have to stay.

However, something could definitely be installed at the end / corner to make best use of that corner?

The problem is making best use of the current border size with the prospect of a separate mini project of the corner.
