Design Dilemma Before & After Gardens

Long, narrow triangular garden ideas?

We have a long (45 foot) narrow triangular garden and juat dont know what to do with it. We want to keep a large seating area near the house, don’t want any grass (ground is very clayish and doesn’t drain) and want lots of flower bedding space. Any ideas for layout, please? Especially the pointed end!

speaking from someone who has the pointed garden for herself, i would suggest that maybe the bottom pointed section you have some thing like a small water feature at ground level, i would also do multi level bedding planters to add levels and a bit of style to things this then allows you to mix both sun needing plants in the higher boxes and shade plants in the lower ones. perhaps something like these then when you get to the pointed bit it will all blend into the same design.

Hi Caron,
The above idea for the tip of your garden is good. A small tree with a seating underneath or something like this would also he an idea.
With a garden that has a striking shape like this, you need to add things inside such as a path, planting beds etx. to take the eyes out of the borders and consequently, the shape.

Thank you both of you! @Jen P: love the idea of looking at what Alys Fowler did. I just took a quick look at pictures of the show/garden and it's exactly the look I'd like to go with. I'll have to try and find a video recording of the show somewhere, as the YouTube link that's on the blog you mentioned does not work. I'll definitely be removing all the paint from the brick walls & repainting. Gravel is good too, but I am also toying with the idea of having decking everywhere instead of the current concrete. Water feature is a nice idea - it would add a relaxing element to the garden, especially in summer when we can sit outside on a Sunday morning to enjoy coffee and a good book! @Patrina: thank you for sending the picture. Interesting idea of splitting the garden into two paths, but I do not think mine is wide enough for that...

I agree with Bespoke Interiors Redbridge UK, definitely put in full height fences, not trees. If the neighbours are problematic (sounds like they're related to mine), the fences will be a safer option than trees that shed leaves/fruit which they might take issue with. Fences also take up less room in a small garden. My garden is only 3m wide, and I have full height fences on both sides. You can paint them or whitewash them if light is an issue, though I have left mine to silver naturally (I just like the look). Get the kids involved in gardening and put raised beds in front of the fences: I am training berry plants up the fences, so they will be green and leafy once the (currently 18 inch tall) plants grow in. Sunflowers are also great to grow along fences and there are plenty of climbing or tall edible plants like sweet peas, maize and tomatoes that are easy for kids to look after (and snack on!). Be careful of getting any evergreen hedges. I have a school one side and have had to ask them to really cut back their leylandii hedge, which has been horribly neglected for years, and it's now getting close to 3.5m tall (guidelines say no more than 2m). It's expensive to cut them back if they have been neglected, so you may be setting yourself up for a big bill down the line.

Climbers would be an excellent idea as they tend not to grow outwards as much as shrubs. Lovely scented climbers are Honeysuckle, Star Jasmine (evergreen), Climbing Roses and Clematis. I don’t think there is much room for underplanting, so I would stick with small perennials such as hardy Geraniums, Aubretia, Erigeron and Alchemilla mollis. Box is quite formal and will need regular trimming. Unfortunately they are also prone to Box blight which has affected some areas in the UK but not others - worth a google! You could also place something of interest at the end such as a statue/piece of art or a water feature.

Thank you @minnie101 for you advice on the horrible neighbour, unfortunately, these people are beyond help, rationalisation will not get through to them. They are very insular and do not respect anyone. It has been very horrific experience even before the renovation and we are yet to even live at the property! Purchased it 2 years ago and started the renovation this Feb, we are currently renting opposite the renovation. Anyway, it is a very long story for another forum, but it has got to the extent of verbal threats of physical attacks.. *sigh*... anyhow a long long story...but appreciate your help in any case. For both you and @Sonia please see photos..of the garden.... you'll have to excuse the overgrown grass and weeds as these area are going to be lowered and levelled. But this will be where the sitting dining area will be. The fence is tapering inwards, you can see the existing shed (we are getting a new one as the roof and pieces of wood disappeared, and thinking of relocating this, but it blocks them from standing on top of the pond) and the mature magnolia just behind and next to it. That yellow block is insulation and that has blocked them looking into the dining and lounge area temporarily. This view is from what is going to be a kitchen area, so basically an open plan kitchen diner. This view is centre as you come through the door into the kitchen diner room. Looking from the left bedroom window. We've already replaced all the fences and planted trees past the orange fence. Looking from the end of the garden, we've already repositioned these apple trees to here as these area will be a vegetable growing area. Midway we were thinking to have a BBQ/chillout area (to the left) as that where the last ray of sun will be. But again, the neighbours standing over and looking..so repositioning of the shed will have to be moved further down? or should we plant evergreen conifers ~3m high to stop them? Looking from the side of the magnolia tree, you can see the house is angled weirdly with a very narrow alleyway to the left where the fence sharply tapers. Thank you....

Hello Caron,

I would use the corner with lots of planting which will also visually bring the garden to a better shape by blurring the corner visually.

Obviously, imagine it all grown and a tree in that top corner.

Also, another note, if you wanted to have an area of grass to give it a softer look, you can use artificial turf like this....

It actually looks really good. It was also used in a celebrity project we completed recently, as they had similar problems.

The curves of this design and focal point at the end of this garden is something you could replicate to great effect in your garden. The curves give the illusion of width and depth that would transform your outside space.
