Overall I think you have made a good start. There are lots of good pieces, the chair, dresser etc. From my viewpoint I think it is the area of the bed which is leaving a bit of a bare feeling, whereas the other areas feel elegantly finished. So I feel something needs to happen there or on the wall behind the bed. A wall hanging of some type at the bed head? A rich fabric or feature piece? Or use the frame of your bed in some way. In the manner it was designed with some swags at the head ead, some material or false pillows in the bedhead? The unfinished feeling you are struggling to overcome is the 'blankness' of this area, and the unfinished area there.

Thank you kazzh. That makes a lot of sense. I would prefer the bed to be black actually as it might add more to the area. not sure how much of a pain it would be to paint it. probably a lot.
I could put some nice paper directly behind the bed - not colourful but maybe a printed one in the gaps between the panels.

I think the second paper would add some drama to your room. I love the way you created a walk in robe area by setting the wardrobe centrally and using it to place the bed against. It creates a nice and calm space to sleep in and a separate area for clothes, which despite our best efforts manage to dishevel the best of rooms!

I think the bed frame could stay white. It fits well with your paintwork. I'm not seeing anything that a black frame would tie into, so changing it may not have the desired effect. Since it could end up being quite a job, working on the bedhead panelling might be an easier starting point.

😣 of course, a black fireplace would be the tie in ! I missed that until I looked through again!

Hi. I'm not sure how effective papering between the panels will be? Have you added something to the back of the wardrobe as it doesn't look standard? If you have, I would remove it. You could then Paper the whole thing or consider panelling or hanging ruched fabric in a darker tone to the bed. (I can't find pics of either of these so imagination is required!).

You mentioned wisteria so just suggesting this Sanderson bedding as an alternative (with similar bed!).

I think a round mirror would work over the chest with some tall stems. The ones in the last pic look really pretty.

I like the idea of riches fabric behind. do you think a pleated curtain would work? it would have to be flat without the small side returns.....

You managed to find pics! I think it could work, is there enough room to fit a tension wire? (I assume that would work best!)

This is such a great room! Lovely to have two windows and large enough to take the furniture you have chosen.

I love the idea of putting something on the back of the wardrobe. To make life easier you could find a large sheet of thin plywood and paper that and then attach to back of wardrobe (would save fiddling about trying to paper in between the batons that are there). An alternative could be to find a piece of fabric you love and then stapling or hanging that over the back of the wardrobe. Maybe a large curtain panel could work? Or a couple would give you a fuller look.

I would also consider adding a rug (or sheepskin?) in front of the fireplace. Something nice and soft for your feet as you get out of bed.

I really like your chest of drawers. I would put a large print or even another mirror over the drawers (but mounted fairly low and close to the countertop). I think that would help the lamps to look a little less lost. Also maybe a plant or two on there. I know you don't like clutter but I think this would give a calm look rather than a busy one!

Katie, I do actually have a huge sheepskin rug there now - it was outside airing when I took the pic. thanks for your ideas.

I will get looking for some curtain fabric, I would probably try to mock the look up first before investing in some nice ones to be made for me.

A curtain pole would give you flexibility to change the drop of fabric or even use ready mades , if you ever felt the need for a mini make over. So glad we have been able to give you some inspiration 🙂

So I have decided that the curtain along the back of the wardrobe idea may not look that great with the bed in front of it. I love the half-testers above, but the beds below are plain and footless, not like mine currently.

So I am leaning more towards dressing the bed itself. Probably with some sheer linen panels, as below.

The question is - should I try to match the curtains taupe, or go for off white? I can get them made on etsy, but obviously no returns......

I think off white. With that style of 4 poster I like the idea of something floaty as you suggested. I also think if you go for taupe it will make the back of the wardrobe stand out more? Hopefully you can use a couple of sheets to test it out?!

Hi, I think the curtains idea is great. Just a little tip, if you want that 'showroom' look for your bed linen, you need to buy a size larger than your actual bed for your bedspread (so if you have a double bed, buy queen; if you have a queen bed, buy king size). Then it drapes lower down to the ground for a more sumptuous look and it's how they always do it in the stores. I think slightly more layers / pattern / texture on the bed linen would help remove the 'blank' feeling where the bed is and make it more of a centerpiece. Good luck :)

Have made a start with some sheer linen drapes, really nice quality fabric, I got them made on etsy.
I do have a larger duvet cover and some other pillow cases I can add texture to the bed itself.
Behind is a small sample of a wallpaper I love by Eijffinger. A deep blue with bronzey spots.
Would this look good in more panels at the back? I might mock it up with some dark blue card and repost. Before spending on the Eijffinger which is a lot.

If anyone is still here..... I have decided to get a new bed I think. The curtains looks quite nice hung against the back of then wardrobes, it was too romanticy hung over the bed.

I quite like a more masculine/ crisper look, and limit is £1k.

I want a bed with a headboard, but apart from that I dont know what will look good....?

Still here! I have a feeling the back of the wardrobes will need to be solid for the wall paper to work, to give you a solid backdrop. Maybe thin ply wood fitted to the back. In one photo your bed shows up beautifully against the blue, however if there were too many lines - the bed, the cross sections of the wardrobe - it won't work well. The drapes would also show up better with the dark backdrop. Maybe try it out with painted large sections of card, stuck together to give a solid field, painted a dark blue before investing in the wall paper? Seeing the pic above gives me confidence that the dark 'feature' wall behind the bed is the way to go to give your room a focus. If you put a backing on the wardrobe, you may just be inclined to paint - which would give the option to change your accent more readily.

Don't give up on the drapes just yet. Yes, draped from the crown down to each corner is a little to romantic for your room, how about draping just across the rear square frame - from rear corner to corner, wound softly but not loosely around the bedframe and down to the floor? Or just one panel attached to the crown, then draped down the bed head smoothly, with no gathering?

It's been a bit drastic and we have taken the top part off the bed! It comes apart and has always pissed me off a bit as the sides were a bit wonky - not fungal shui.

The drapes are on the back, I quite like it - I need another hook in the middle as the rod sags a little bit.

But the overall look is getting smarter which is what I also wanted.

I do also agree the blue looks good as a feature.

another project is to do something with the fire surround (it used to be horrible green tiles and is covered with thin board painted white). maybe I could use something like it on there.

Smart idea to remove the top section, makes so much difference. It distracted from the bed itself. And the drapes at the back of the bed, so much better! Just take care of the sag in the middle and I think you have remedied the incomplete feeling. oh, see if you can find some finials for where the top attached to the main section so they aren't open. Some small brass or silver acorns? You could maybe use curtain rod finials....
