landscape design Gardens Design Dilemma

Garden help please!

Hi everyone, this is my friends garden. She would like to do something to the back of her house so to 'soften' the drop from house to garden. She does not have a large budget and would appreciate any ideas for adding levels and/or steps in. Thank you

Hi,

A good start would be to open the patio from the front (like image below), not side as existing, and do a multi levelled transition.

I love side steps like existing as they ate just that bit more interesting than straight on ones! Needs planting in from of the wall. A border dug out? It's just a bit bare. I don't see the need for changing the stairs.

Hi. I think your garden looks really nice as it is but I see what you mean about creating extra room for flower beds. I think if you push out where the beds are now a little it should look lovely. Very easy as well as all you’d have to do is move the edging stones then dig up the turf, churn the soil up with garden fork and add some extra compost. At a little extra cost I think it might be nice to add a patio area under where your table and chairs are currently. You could have a go at this yourself as there are plenty of online tutorials and could even source reclaimed slabs from second hand sites such as ebay, gumtree etc. I scribbled on your photos to give you an idea (click to enlarge). P.s. I think the whirligig washing line could be placed somewhere more discreet or better still replaced with a retractable one somehow. I know they’re necessary, just my personal opinion but I’m not a huge fan of the whirly ones:)

I would advertise the pavers locally on Facebook or other sites as you may find people are looking for complete paving slabs for shed bases or rubble for groundworks. If you are willing to give them time to organise collection as you decide your plans for the space, you may contribute less to landfill and save money. Always a good thing! Have you thought about taking up some areas for planting but leaving some for seating and a table , not sure the direction of this area and sun position but having a quiet area away from children and ball games is a haven! Sectioning with a pergola and trellis could offer privacy from your neighbours. It also looks like excellent overflow parking, do you need this occasionally , would that be a requirement in your future plans?

Hi Danny, I think that overall, this rough shape that you have already established (an area for patio outside the house, a lawn with a path down the middle to a second - possibly seating? - area) looks good for a modern formal design for a garden of your shape. I don't really know the measurements, but from the pictures it seems that the patio area outside the house seems a bit on the small side. I would make it a bit bigger so that you can put some seating provision in it, maybe with a fire bowl (since as I understand it this is a shady area?). You also need space for planting to make this garden come alive. I would create planting areas around the seating areas and also along the lawn area. I didn't really understand where the change in level is (and hence where you want to put the retaining wall), but I would possibly plant along that retaining wall as well. I would go for an elegant planting scheme with grasses and discrete whites and maybe cool blues and possibly use some box balls or something similar to line the borders, so that the planting also has a modern look to go with the design. I’d keep the stairs at it is too. it keeps it as a usable space instead of turning it into a thoroughfare.

as Ellie said, it needs planting. I would plant shrubs against that wall. I think the back of the house needs softening too so I would add wall pots, hanging baskets and pots to the seating area immediately outside the house

Thank you all - your help is appreciated. The decision is planting possibly in a sleeper style raised bed that encompasses the slope.
