Dining Rooms Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Dining room needs help!

Hello, I’m posting on behalf of my mum, currently trying to revamp the dining room and cannot decide on colour scheme or accessories etc. As you can see it’s very neutral and lacks warmth/texture. Curtains will go, dining table could change but ideally looking for a makeover on a budget. Mirrors, artwork?
I’ve suggested duck egg blues with gold accessories? Perhaps a new rug?
Very much open to ideas, thanks.

Hi, it would be useful to see the rest of the room, as I think it's open to the kitchen? Perhaps panelling the walls will be nice though. To just above the bottom 3rd or so. Painting that warm white, with a slightly darker colour on the walls above.

I would remove the vertical blinds, replace them with a simple sheer roller blind for privacy and full length, wall to wall curtains for luxury.

But then again, this might not go well with the rest of the room at all...

I tried to place furniture in your room, but do not know where is window or not. So I got what I got. I am sure the round dining table will be better. I just did not have it in my software. Try to move two sofas on different direction. may be both on the corner would be better. Round table is on other corner.

I think you could put the tv in the opposite corner on the other side of the window, then put the two chairs (if they'll fit) side by side on that wall (with the door) with the table in between. If these are a bit too snug, you could always angle them into the centre of the room. Then the sofa could go opposite the window at right angles to the door, but a little over towards the fireplace wall. This will give you clearly defined "square" sitting room area, which you can further delineate with a rug in your chosen accent colour and then add coordinating or matching cushions and throws. I would then move what I think is a glass cabinet (in the corner of the dining part of the room) to the left hand side of the radiator cabinet. I would then try to move the dining table more towards the kitchen and the now empty corner. For the dining table I would look at getting something like a table runner or a big bowl/vase/ornament with reflects your chosen accent colour which will visually join up the two areas. I would also be tempted to replace one of the pictures with a large mirror. And also perhaps think about getting different wall art.

What I mean is, does there have to be a (formal) dining table in this room?

I’m sure the room will look much nicer dressed, but I still feel a dining table seems to emphasise the rectangular and box-like character so if the dining table could go elsewhere in the house this could become a more sociable space perhaps.

Ahh I see what you mean, I was thinking in terms of style. Yes, there does need to be a dining table in this room, it’s a long open plan kitchen / dining room and it is the only place a dining table can go in the house.
To the right of the picture it leads through to the living room which is again mainly cream with pale blue/green wallpaper.

I think teak wood looks lovely with navy walls. A step too far maybe? Otherwise green is always a lovely, warm colour and it will go with the curtains so mum can keep those? The walls also need mirrors and art, they are too bare at the moment, but I think you know that already. Here’s some pics to inspire, with a variety of tables if she decides to change it.

Ah I see. Maybe it would be useful for people to help if you could show more of the surrounding space.

Thank you Sonia, loving those ideas.. especially the second to bottom pic, I think these colours would work really well. Also love the navy blue, I’d go for it but not sure my mum is that brave! 😊

If it were my room I would change the lighting first as overhead lighting can be harsh- put the spots on a dimmer and if there is a sideboard add a couple of table lights or standard lamps.
I find the walls bare and so I would paint them a deeper colour and add pictures. You might even consider a big mirror to visually widen the space.
But I like the rug and actually the curtains probably worry you more than me.

Hi Lucy,

These types of spaces are quite hard to decorate due to it being quite narrow.

I’d suggest bringing some colour into the space to lift it through art work and accessories. Shelving is also a great way to add some depth and texture. Regarding the colour I’d keep it really neutral. I love navy and greens but sometimes they are over powering. I really think this space would look lovely in warm whites. The rug brings texture already. You can add to this by introducing colour through patterns.
Re the table and chairs...are these something she’s wanting to change? Another option would be to have an upholstered bench so that the table can move closer to one of the walls. That way they’d be more space for a narrow console for some lamps, mirror and accessories on the opposite side. I’d also suggest a pendant to create a focal point.
