POLL: What do you put above your fireplace?
Comments (43)I am lucky enough to live in a flatshare that has a fireplace, even if it doesn't work! I just love the way it brings the room together and encourages snuggling up on the sofas with a nice cup of hot tea and a good book to read! There is something very homely about a fireplace and although our one is bare of any mantlepiece decorations, one of my favorite artworks claimed its spot above it almost as soon as I stepped foot in the house! The color of the marble and the undertones in the paintings couldn't have worked any better if I wanted them to and I feel like the dimensions are pretty well balanced! My flatmates certainly didn't oppose!...See MoreFireplace challenge
Comments (24)If you want to try working with the fireplace still in situ, I'd definitely remove the chunky hearth bit with its ugly ramparts and replace with a slab of granite or similar. If you also remove the flared top bit, you could then try framing it all with a wooden surround, as in Dolly's first pic, or like Minnie's pic, just replace with a simple mantel. I actually like the yellow wall paint but the band of white above the picture rail is very jarring and makes the fireplace look even squatter. We decided we couldn't live with the hideous brick fireplace in our new home and so we removed it, re-plastered the wall and made way for a big sofa instead. However, there isn't a chimney breast in our room as the chimney is external, so we were able to turn the room around. Good luck and I hope you love your end result!...See MoreFireplace ideas for small place
Comments (2)Hi, A small bio ethanol grate would be perfect for this project. A bio fire basket gives you more flexibility and is the perfect solution for replacing your old redundant fire opening. They're easy to fit in, and can be used with any mantelpiece, with no chimney required, and comes in all different beautiful styles and sizes. We hope that helps, you can view our page for more fireplace ideas!...See MoreWhat height ‘hole in the wall’ gas fireplace?
Comments (1)I have a small gas stove in my fireplace with the controls at the front. The installers opened up the aperture as much as they could and fitted stone back panels. It may be possible to increase your opening size after the fire and surround have been removed. This is my stove....See More- 6 years ago
