I would make the FP smaller and then have the TV on one side above those matching cabinets , those a bit lower and then a piece of art on the other side . That would keep the TV at a good viewing height and I think the FP in better proportion too. I think shelving only works when you have a few very special things to display

I agree the fireplace and mantel are too high..the mantel should be low enough to leave the option open to put the tv above it..as well as leaving shelving open for side placement until you decide...if your room is not deep ..the height should be based on the closest possible location of the furniture ....

If there is a crunch ...you could consider a wider ..lower fireplace ..altho this is more contemporary than traditional it may also project less into the room..

Thanks everyone! I do like the idea of having the tv on the side. I was wondering if anyone knows the inches from the floor I should make the mantel. The drawing right now has it at 57". We have a 9' ceiling. What is the lowest, I can make the mantel?

Btydrvn thanks for telling me about the closest furniture tip. Do I measure the height of the sofa if it is closest or measure how far it is from the fireplace?

How far it is from the fireplace..but a floor plan is also necessary to be sure your seating will work with the tv placement...and how big a tv you plan on using

I would suggest lowering the side cabinetry to about window seat height...that is part of what is driving the fireplace height ...and distracting from the fireplace being the focal point

Lastly...if you want a big tv and a big fireplace the centered location may be the only option ..as is ..the tv is a very tight fit in a side position

Possibly Check code. We are putting in a mantle (wood) and I think it has to be 12” above the firebox at a minimum, plus more based on depth.

Is this a masonry built fireplace or a prefab. Is it wood burning or gas? If it is a prefab or gas fireplace, the minimum mantel height will be dictated by the installation manual. If it is masonry, you will need to check your local building codes, but the typical rule is as Irol96 said, 12" to the bottom of the mantel, but it also depends on how deep the mantel is.

So, they way you have this drawn out, the fireplace opening to be about 34" tall, which is a bit tall. You can reduce that by 6" if it is a masonry fireplace and lower the mantel by 6".

So more details about the actual fireplace are important here.

I would reduce the size of the central portion and put the tv at eye level for more comfortable viewing. Art is a better centerpiece over the mantel.
