I really like the Chic Shadow colour. Very elegant. I would carry on that colour above and down the sides of the fireplace.

I agree with the others, earthy colours like olive green bring out the beauty of wood, the coffee table is a lovely colour.

I've got a very deep olive green on my kitchen wall with shelves. It is quite hardcore and very retro. Little Greene 'Light Bronze Green. Bancha (below) by F&B is less yellow and a bit cleaner and grassier.

Dulux Overtly Olive looks nice. I’ve not used it, but am thinking of it for my kitchen once worktops and sink has been replaced. It’s quite pale though?

I like the deeper colours that Colourhappy suggested. Here both are in your room. But get some swatches of colours that appeal to you and get testers of two or three of the most appealing. Or just let father in law paint away and have him do it again if you don't like the result ;-)

Thinking of ordering today though.... loving Green Smoke? Originally liked Bancha, but might be a bit too green? It's north facing. Only use this room at night. Couple pics of how it currently looks, ready for painting after the many layers of wallpaper have been stripped....

Oh, and that's Polished Pebble above the picture rail, was going to just leave that there and ceiling white?

It probably depends on your eventual colour choice for the walls but I’m doubtful the Polished Pebble will work.

I feel that part needs to either be in the colour of the ceiling, or of the wall.

Haha, its been like that for 5 years now, ceiling white and walls were chic shadow. I have loads of white paint. Main thing is the main walls - do you think the green smoke would work?

The olive in minnie's pic does look good but I think thats really because it goes well with the current cushions/painting - which would be replaced whatever wall colours I go for

Personally I find Green Smoke a bit cool, but that's probably because I am very sensitive to colour temperature. I wouldn't leave the colour above the ceiling, it won't go with Green Smoke or a more typical olive. I love the cushion colour, I think it looks vibrant and warm.

I really like Green Smoke. It reminds me of a fab reading room in a Gentleman’s Club.

I like Green Smoke but I’ve never seen it in real life so may be worth getting a match pot to be sure. There is also another deep green which looks a bit olive, but not much, called Treron, but I’ve only seen it in photos. I would keep the bit above the picture rail the same as the ceiling. Bancha looks lovely in photos but it's really grassy green. Lots of greens in other makes too such as Fired Earth.

So, decided against the original Navy blue, and then decided against the greens.......... looking at the original pic, it probably looks like I have not actually painted the walls!!!

We had Dulux Chic Shadow for the last 5 years, it had been painted over about 4 layers of wallpaper.

All that wallpaper has now been removed and all the holes filled in so walls were ready to get painted but I just couldn't decide.

Since our Christmas tree would be arriving in a matter of days, I dug out a 10 litre tub of Johnstones Manhattan grey that was in the garage and just got father in law to do that, it means we are not looking at bare walls over Christmas! And we can paint over after if we decide to!

Although its called grey it appears blue sometimes and then sometimes even a bit of green - as well as looking grey sometimes - maybe its just my eyesight!!
