Do we have a lintel?

We have had our old back boiler removed, ripped out the old surround and are now wanting to enlarge the fireplace opening to house an electric stove with an oak Mantle above. This is something we were hoping to do ourselves instead of getting a builder in but since knocking of some of the plaster we can't see a lintel. Does anyone have any ideas? Do we need to go even higher or could something else be in place? Picture in comments. Thanks
