Gap between fireplace insert & drywall/tile

Dilema: I’m stuck with what I have here and am looking for a solution. The fireplace insert is slightly back and should have been slightly forward. This has left a gap between the edges of the insert and the dryall. It’s not so bad with the drywall but once the tile and tile cement are added it’s going to make the distance even wider. I will consider putting Schluter Finec on the tile edge, but looking for suggestions on how to minimize or hide the gap. The completed picture is an example of the large format smooth tile I’m using.

I had the exact problem with my own fireplace and once the tile was on I put black angle iron over the tile edge and back into the gap. Just standard edging I believe was purchased at Homedepot. It worked great and there is no gap at all. In fact in order to see if it would work without a committment I just used two sided tape on the inside of the metal strip and stuck it on. I was thinking how I would attach it once it came off but it never came unstuck. LOL its been there over a year, constant fires and heat so Im thinking at this point I wont have to take it off

Dear Jennifer, i agree with the other commentators the fireplaces look original. They might be marble but are more likely to be marbleised slate. But the tiles look very new. I am sure originally the fireplace would have had a caste iron insert. I have a large marbleised slate fireplace in my lounge, and another in the cellar which had been removed from the dining room by previous owners. Although large my fireplaces would have had caste iron inserts, both removed before I bought the house. The only thing that appears strange in your photographs is the location of the fireplaces, especially the top one which appears to be located in a corner. Has this room been divided, the wall to the right of your picture may be new, butted up against the chimney stack. The skirtings also appear new, which would confirm this. You don't say whether or not you are concerned how dominant these features are. I was concerned for some time as to how to integrate my fireplace into my white and Ivory colour scheme, however a brushed steel insert, firegarde has helped. I'll send photographs if that would help.

Paint it white. Start with watered down chalk paint, and build it up until you're happy with the depth of white. If you're really uncertain, leave it a day or two between coats so you can keep an eye on it when it's dry. It's only a small area, so it won't take long to paint, or scrub it off if you went too far! I'd also put a wooden shelf/mantleshelf along the top, in an aged oak or pine, which would look lovely with the blue walls (judging by the tester marks in your photo!), or black/grey to coordinate with any furniture pieces. Oh, and don't touch the metal bit, unless you're blacking it! :)

Of course. The dimensions would depend on the size of the fireplace/burner you would be going for. The opening would have to be made of non-flammable material, such as brick, stone, metal, porcelain tiles, Vermiculite Board, etc. You could use non-flammable paint over that. For example, our freestanding baskets like the one Richard posted above need 60 cm clearance from the bottom to the top; or if you wanted a contemporary line of fire look you could go for our Regulating Bio Containers like the one in the photo below - all required dimensions are available in the brochure with building advice on our website. I’m no expert, but it looks like a Victorian or Victorian style insert that you have there. Normally it would have a surround which will sit on the hearth. You could try reclamation yards if you want an authentic surround to match, however there are many very good reproduction ones for sale on eBay etc. if there is a gap between your insert and the surround you can fill that gap with attractive tiles. I bought a very basic pine surround from B&Q and painted it white, who would know? The first pic is how, maybe, it should look, the second is modern tiling used to fill the gap, and bottom is my truly, original B&Q special! 😊

I no longer have actual product I used but if you google Paulin aluminum angle and look at the images and sizes they have a lot to choose from. I dont know who made mine but it was home depot big box inexpensive. The piece I used was very light weight and black finish, identical to my insert. Light weight was key I think to it just staying in place
