Bullnose vs Square edge coping

Hello I’m in the process of building a pool and trying to decide between bullnose and square edge coping. To me it seems square edge looks a bit more modern but bullnose is a little more finished although possibly outdated. My pool has straight lines and will be using a modern looking glass accent tile scheme. Any pros and cons to either besides personal preference?

You can use the square edge but have the edges ”eased” so they’re not so sharp.

We have not used bull nose coping since the late 90's.

I feel it's outdated for one. Secondly, in the freeze thaw locations, moisture will follow the contour of the "nose" and land on the tile. If there any slight gaps on the tile or grout, moisture can in, freeze, and loosen the tile or even the setting bed for the coping.

A square edge allows water to travel straight down. It's a much more classic, modern look in my opinion.

We install a lot of natural stone coping, namely Indiana Limestone or Bluestone, with a squared edge. Sometimes Travertine.

After setting the material, we go back with a sander and remove the sharp edge. This makes it's more comfortable to sit on the pool's edge without scraping the back of your knees.

Sometimes we have given the edge a "pencil" edge or an "eased" edge. It's not quite a bull nose, but more rounded than an eased edge.

For your pool, I would use long slabs - 6'-8'. Not 2' stones. The longer stones have less joints and are not busy like 2' stones.

14" width also (front to back measurement) as opposed to typical 12". There's an appreciable difference in the look of a 14" width over 12".

Our minimum widths for our projects are 14" and the stones are 2" thick.

Hello donned2004, Well you could remove all the things from the hearth.. So it has more space.. Hang the mirror and paint the chimney breast a nice colour to bring the fireplace into full focus.. If you wanted to have an even bigger recess.. you could open the fire out up to the sides of the wooden surround.. So taking out the 30's tiles.. Make sure the lintel is in place or doesn't need replacing and keep the surround it's rather nice.. Remove the current tiled hearth if you chose to open it out more.. and install a flat piece of slate.. So then you would have an open brick recess and a lovely iron basket could sit nicely inside for logs! Another idea to continue into the room.. might be to look at painting the woodwork a colour to compliment any wall colours you have.... Some lovely painted floorboards, or parquet or a natural Jute or Coir flooring if you have not already decided upon something.. : ))

Hi Ben, I like the 2nd last design, the one without the cupboard opposite the boiler. Having a wall unit there breaks the sight line and makes it feel cluttered. I would use the shelves for glasses and cups. I have wood worktops from worktop express. Great quality, just a little wear 3 years on. We opted for an oil finish and need to do the 1st re-oil soon. We have a dishwasher so minimal dishes done but the sink is siliconed under it's rim. Water doesn't seem to be an issue yet.

Latest advice appreciated on the best big induction downdraught hobs please (Berbel, Bora, Gaggenau, Siemens, Bosch or others). We want best steam and fat clearance rates, quietest motors, easy-clean (unsure re self-clean, ducted or recirulated air). Berbel's FaceBook page features lots of customer complaints regarding after-sales service and spare parts, but some seem due to Covid delays which we think is unavoidable; another mentions guests sitting "in a haze" from the recirculated air and obviously nobody wants that! We need to order very soon but definitely don't want ceiling extraction. Many thanks for prompt replies!
