Design Dilemma Kitchens Living Rooms

Hi there!

So .....we are rejigging an existing wrap
around extension to remove some supporting columns and partial walls in the kitchen/diner ... funny how tastes change!

In my ambition to knock down walls we are considering removing the wall between our largish rear south facing lounge and the kitchen diner (we have a lounge at the front but it’s north facing so we only use it at Christmas 🤷‍♀️).

I am struggling with all of this - the kitchen layout, the flow, the walkways, possible pocket doors and furniture arrangement ....

Here are a couple of options but also, not drawn but attached in a stick photo is the thought of the kitchen running down the entire outside wall and an island parallel with dining table mirroring the island.

As with all these plans I worry that the area is not really large enough for my ambitions so any comments would be gratefully received

Hi Marion,
What is the dream? Always start with the dream and we can work from there. If that space isn't enough, perhaps it's about removing the wall between the snug and the drawing room and combining into one so that it is a space that is used all year round. The sliding doors can still be used to divide the space up but essentially the three rooms become one.

I’m not very good at flows etc but I do wonder whether you might be a bit short on worktop space? There’s a long run of tall units, but not much worktop area that I can see. I’m not a fan of hobs on islands, but I know they are popular.
I think I would try to find a way to incorporate the Christmas lounge with the rest of the house, maybe glazed doors in place of the wall to improve lighting and give the option of closing off if need be.
With the dining table so close to the island, do you need both? But there are others on here who have much more insight than I do on these matters. Have fun planning. Angie

Leave the brick, how about using a heavy duty hard wearing wallpaper with texture on the walls in grey or a feature wall? And use something interesting as a splash back. Our house is all grey and whites - white walls and mid-grey carpets. Kitchen is gloss white with concrete effect laminate worktop and vinyl mid grey tiles for flooring (quieter & warmer & safer). We have used a darker grey gloss ceramic tile as a splash back and it looks great. We are currently selling our house and have had 17 people through in two days...... the colours are obviously popular!!! Good Luck!

Hi Tiziana - we’re a bit late replying to this, sorry! Just in case you’re still pondering what to do, we would definitely advise choosing a bold single colour fabric with a some texture in the weave. Colourwise, a rich yellow would really work well and contrast your sofas and the petrol blue of your kitchen units. One of our recent customers did the same, and has never looked back. I think if you go back to the other post, where the kitchen was at the top, it demonstrates why that's better. The front door is no longer right in the middle of the lounge area. The lounge / dining area is much larger and sits in the space better. At present, although the kitchen is really nice where it is, bottom left, it compromises the lounge area, and it gives the biggest available space to the dining table. It's just not the best use of available space ( in my opinion ). Arranging the whole space around the idea of having a window in the kitchen really spoils the entire layout. When everything was considered on the other post, this layout works best for everything, Lounge, Kitchen and dining area. I think you could put in a cupboard from left to right by the door, but that compromises the light in the kitchen. You could also build another wall to screen off partially the kitchen from the rest of the apartment - Have an American style Fridge Freezer there, and, maybe a coat cupboard opposite. However, I do feel that as you've pointed out before, there are only two of you and you have three bedrooms. Why not turn one of the bedrooms in to a dressing area, with ample room for all coats and shoes, then you wouldn't need to try and put too much in the main living area.

Hi Becky, I would suggest getting a professional on board. As mentioned above it is important to get to know your likes and dislikes and then build up what you require within the space you have (with your existing items). Interior designers and concept planners can definitely help with this so it is worth doing some research into it and the costs. Like us, there are many that can offer 3D plans and videos as part of the basic packages so you can see how the space works and feels to navigate - rather than always trying to work it out from 2D's. We also offer three options as a standard, so this is often a good place to start and get to understand how your space works by seeing it in a variety of scenarios. It helps to ensure you get it right first time :) which is really important when embarking on a project this size. I hope it helps. Agree with Angie on counter space, this looks like not much at all! How many people are in your household? If you don’t use the front room much could you go for a smaller round dining table in the left corner of the extension, and use the front room as a formal dining room for when you have guests? That would let you have a much larger kitchen if you wanted it.
