Stairs and landing carpet - colour ideas please
We’ve spent much of the recent lockdowns putting our own stamp on the house we moved into 18 months ago, and now having done the hall, stairs and landing ourselves, I‘m getting round to thinking about what to replace the carpet on the stairs and landing with (Which I should have done first maybe). And it’s difficult not being able to go into shops and look at samples at the moment too.
We’ve used Dulux Tuscan Glade 5 on the painted walls, and the “aqua” Sanderson Picture Gallery wallpaper with white woodwork. We have a dog so need something to cope with his hair and claws, so I’d be interested in any ideas about colour. I’m thinking about grey carpet but don’t want it to look to dark or cold. Despite the large window on the half-landing, the rest of the landing is really dark. Thanks!

Comments (3)I agree the grey-green colour is lovely, and it's quite restful so I don't think it would be too much if you wanted to do the whole lot in that colour. Also it would go very nicely with the parquet. However if you want to break it up, you could consider installing a dado rail and have colour under the dado and white/neutral above, or vice versa. You could even install panelling up to dado height. I don't know whether panelling or dado rails are strictly authentic for 1930s, you would have to check that, but I think it would look ok even if not authentic, as long as the style is simple. One more thought, are you going to carpet the stairs? (They look lovely bare but will be very noisy I imagine). Comments (3)Personally I’d go for neutral carpets, they should in theory last a lot longer than paint then you’re not so tied to a colour palette when you want to change a room. I’d lift the neutral walls with accent colours for art and accessories and plants will also add some life...See More- 5 years ago

@Diane Stanley yes I can see what you mean, and it’s a lovely colour, particularly in a grey room, but every time I’ve looked at the colours in the pattern of the wallpaper, I don’t like any of them together with the paint colour we’ve used. Even the surrounds of each pictur. Which is odd, because I’m really happy with the combination overall!

John Lewis do this carpet (Adam carpet - Flare) they also do it in Chantilly Grey which is a soft grey. I’ve had stripes twice now on my stairs and wanted something a bit different - the zig zags are very subtle and don’t play with your eyes when going down the stairs (unlike some striped carpets).

5 years agoTry these people. Loads of herringbone and some quite bold ones too. They do pieces for the landing and turns. I had a runner from them. Prices are reasonable but you have to do the measuring yourself and send them a drawing if you want turns etc. Mine was quite a dark narrow staircase. Don’t think it matters really and a light carpet doesn’t brighten it up. I think it’s the walls and contrast that matters. https://www.stairrunnersdirect.com/Stair-Runners/Patterned

We went with a dark Grey but depending on the time of day looks darker/lighter. The carpet company also bound it for us on the stairs. Very easy to keep clean. The stair rods wouldn't be ideal with the dog but otherwise it's a good shade of Grey particularly for heavy traffic.
