Hi Nell51. I have done lots of painting recently and have used both oil based and water based paints. We live in a house with lots of conker coloured varnish and I too prepped it with Zinsser Bin. I then used Rustins water based undercoat to further obliterate the dark wood. The oil based paint I would highly recommend is Little Green. I have never used such good quality paint before and there is a great choice of colours (we opted for Portland Stone pale eggshell). I have also used Farrow and Ball eggshell (Shadow White) which is water based and therefore shouldn't yellow. However I discovered a whole new vocabulary of expletives whilst doing this as it was like painting with PVA glue. Even though I used the right brush and have a lot of experience of painting I found it awful to use. I then discovered a product called Owatrol which is a waterborne paint conditioner. You add it to the F&B paint and it increases flow and becomes more like an oil based paint. It is the best product I have ever discovered and worth every penny. My language has improved too. If you look at the following images, the first one - the floor picks up the same colour from the units, is still light in tone but has some interest due to the wood grain. This seems to work. The second and third one look too tonally similar to me, the last image works as the units are darker than the floor. My preference is the first image as the gloss cashmere is very uniform, the floor really adds some interest.

Personally I’m not keen on mirrored wardrobe doors. I have shaker style wardrobes in a soft taupe and a separate mirror on the wall nearby.

Thanks guys, one of the comments a friend made got me doubting, saying they’d be hard to clean but one supplier said it wouldn’t be an issue as they weren’t porous as they were well sealed so I assumed that if I sealed everything after grouting they’d be ok... Nevertheless a question mark about clashing styles got me wondering about whether it was worth it! Don’t want to go for plain boring white ordinary tiles though... as such I was wondering if I went that route whether grey grouting would add more interest or if I should go for a pearlescent craquelure look or am I just getting further away from a current cohesive look? Help!
