What satin/eggshell to paint wardrobes white that won't go yelllow?1

I'm prepping my fitted wardrobes to paint as they were orange pine and I can't afford to replace them. So far I've applied a coat of Zinsser Bin and sanded. I want to paint them white and would usually use Dulux or Farrow & Ball but the reviews for both eggshell/satin aren't great. It appears that due to EU regulations a lot of the whites are discolouring. There are four double wardrobes so it's quite a big job which I don't want to repeat in a few years due to the paint going yellow. I'd really appreciate any help/advice as I feel I'm going round in circles.

How about dulux trade diamond satinwood or eggshell?

Thanks for your comment Tamp75. Have you used either and are you happy with the results? My problem is the reviews of the products are putting me off purchasing them. Ideally I could do with personal recommendations and I'm looking for something hat isn't going to yellow. Thank you.

I just wanted to share my experience because I am on a non existent budget too. I saw a picture of a bench I loved, contacted the carpenter, and he has just made me a birch ply kitchen for a total of 1600 euros, including fitting. (600 labour, 400 fitting, 600 for materials). He has kept his price low for me because he likes the project. I am guaranteed to use him now to build wardrobes, boxes, and shelving solutions as and when I have budget. Sometimes talking to individuals who work for themselves/do it on the side can result in very cost-effective solutions! I am paying 300 euros for brushed stainless steel countertops, and got a belfast sink for 100 euro including the mixer tap. Will send u a pic when it's done but my almost dream kitchen has been possible for like 2000 euros (£1800?) I wouldn't shy away from painting the units yourself as there are many tutorials online to show you how, but it is labour-intensive and eggshell paint on cabinets = drips!! You could always just get white or raw cabinets for now, and paint later when you have some cash? Make sure you use quality brushes if you go this route. Nothing more annoying than little hairs sticking in your lovely paint :-/

Hello fhparis I painted my 1980's fitted dark brown wardrobes a year ago. I was able to remove a shelf which i used to practice on and to get an idea of the finish i could achieve. Or indeed if i could do it. Your wardrobes are lighter in colour which is a plus. I mentioned the products i used in an earlier post. Dont underestimate how long it will take to do. I think i applied 3 undercoats and at least 3 top coats. It was well worth the effort and cost a fraction of buying new wardrobes. The pics show 2 sets of painted wardrobes. Need help painting MDF bedroom wardrobes

We've just had new sliding sash windows put in and our bedroom ones have arched tops. The fitter routed MDF to fit around the windows and then edged in wood. I have used Leyland Trade Acrylic Primer Undercoat. Sanded down before starting and in-between coats. So far I have applied 2 coats applied with synthetic bristle brushes from Screwfix and the finish looks almost complete. I think i will apply 2 top coats of Leyland Trade Acrylic Eggshell. Both of these paints are water based so dry quickly and easy to clean the brushes afterwards. This is the first time I have painted MDF and so far I am really pleased. You must wear a mask when you sand the MDF and hoover the dust from all the surfaces before painting. Hey Jen, I'm still paralysed by indecision on the blinds/curtain front! Making do with the white roller blinds for now - but as the rest of the room comes together they look more and more shabby :(. Managed to choose a rug and some prints for above the bed frame so I'm making progress at least. Will post an update when the wardrobes are finished. If you're anywhere near London I'll let you know the company I'm using if they prove to be good. I think price-wise its reasonable for the slightly complicated design (having to work around an awkward narrow chimney). I've heard mixed things about the F&B paints - most of the negatives from decorators I've read has been about the wall paints rather than the eggshell designed for woodwork. It's too expensive for me to indulge most of the time but on a comparatively small area like this I think its probably worth splashing out. I've heard good things about Little Greene too and there's a shop pretty close to the F&B one on Marylebone High St so will look at both.

Hi Nell51. I have done lots of painting recently and have used both oil based and water based paints. We live in a house with lots of conker coloured varnish and I too prepped it with Zinsser Bin. I then used Rustins water based undercoat to further obliterate the dark wood. The oil based paint I would highly recommend is Little Green. I have never used such good quality paint before and there is a great choice of colours (we opted for Portland Stone pale eggshell). I have also used Farrow and Ball eggshell (Shadow White) which is water based and therefore shouldn't yellow. However I discovered a whole new vocabulary of expletives whilst doing this as it was like painting with PVA glue. Even though I used the right brush and have a lot of experience of painting I found it awful to use. I then discovered a product called Owatrol which is a waterborne paint conditioner. You add it to the F&B paint and it increases flow and becomes more like an oil based paint. It is the best product I have ever discovered and worth every penny. My language has improved too. I've used dulux once satinwood for my staircase and door frames and there's no sign of any discolouration after a year. I also found the once paint went on smoothly and seems to 'self level' so you don't see any brush strokes.

Only downside it that it needs white spirit to clean brushes after as its not water based.

From what I understand the paint companies have now overcome the yellowing issues. You'll even see a lot of the tins now have a sticker saying 'non yellowing formula' on them.
