Hi Anne, I think Man About The House has missed out a few important steps in the process here. This wall light was originally intended to be mounted on a wall where the cabling in the wall is protected from movement/damage. By mounting the same light on a bed, the cabling becomes exposed and is therefore more likely to get damaged. The fittings also look like they are metal so they will need to be earthed. It is important that the cabling used is suitable for the purpose. I would expect to use a three core flex for this. The cable will also need to be adequately supported/clamped on the rear of the bed frame. This is to stop damage to the cable and also the risk of the cable being pulled back through the hole in the bed and potentially exposing live connectors. I would look at using screw-in cable clips of a suitable size to clamp the cable to the bed frame. An electrician would know all of this. I am not quite sure why an "odd job Handyman" thinks that an electrician wouldn't be aware of this, it is after all what electricians do! The cable can then be connected into a plug and the fuse changed to be suitable for the light fitting - 3 Amps would be suitable. With reference to the screws supplied with the fitting. These are likely to be about 25mm long and come with rawlplugs. These are designed to be mounted into a brick wall. I suspect that the headboard will be about 18mm thick so you will need shorter 'self tapping' screws. If when using these screws, the fitting does not feel strongly attached enough, the alternative is to use a machine thread screw and nut. To fit these, you will need to drill through the headboard with a small drill bit (say 5mm diameter). You then fit the machine screw through the mounting plate on the light, through the hole in the bed and then fit a penny washer and nut on the other side. Be careful that the bolt isn't too long so that it doesn't prevent a sharp hazard on the rear of the bed. It is easier than it sounds but there are a few things to watch out for. An electrician should be able to do all of this for you though : ) If anything's unclear, then just let me know. Thanks, Peter

You can buy all the missing bits on Ebay or in fact all over the web. I've done it several times when installing fireplaces, working or non-working. Just measure up your hole and find bits that fit in it. You just need the fire grate and the Ash pan cover - straight or curved, whichever you fancy.

Hi, yes they're actual flames with all the natural movement and variation you'd expect (and the volume of flames/heat output is controllable with it being gas). When the stove is set up, there are ceramic 'logs' and embers positioned (that do look very realistic) and also some stuff that looks like wire that they call Emberglow. This wiry stuff is near invisible and spread/clumped at the bottom and this causes the flames to vary and lick and dance upwards. We were worried a fake wood burner would look naff and were disappointed when we knew we couldn't have the real thing, but went to see this in action in a showroom and were impressed! It helps that the model we have also comes as a real wood burner and the cast body is identical for both.

Been a bit busy over the last couple of weeks with work and doing a bit of wallpapering every night (who knew wallpapering an 11 foot drop was torture on an amateurs arms and shoulders!) we have finally got it done. Been doing some research too and apparently the house is Edwardian not Victorian, though lots of Victorian styles came through into the period. Edwardian is apparently 1890 to 1914 (even though Queen Victoria was still on the throne). Every day is a schoolday! Anyway, the look we have gone for is very old fashioned, opulent yet comfortable and cosy. It is not quite finished as I am going to investigate some oak mouldings to get the bookcases looking less Ikea and more country house library. It really won't be to everyone's taste and is quite different to most of the styles you see on here but we like it. :) The other bit of completely awesome news is that we won the recent Houzz/ Schneider light switches competition and a lovely lady from Schneider has come to visit to show us the switches we could have. Having not won anything like this before I am incredibly excited! They are not fitted yet but we will be sharing photos of the typical bodge we have found in the house that this will fix. In addition to how the room looked before we moved in, here is a photo of the room when we first decided to buy. And now... from the door And from the patio door And the other corner The picture on the mantel will be replaced by a big ornate gold framed mirror. We grabbed the pic from an antiques place but it turns out to be a print - darn it, Antiques Roadshow hopes dashed! lol! So, onward and upwards, the study is probably next, I am feeling the possibility of a 60s mustard and grey vibe in there!
