Coving yes or no?

We are currently renovating the downstairs of our house. My husband is trying to convince me to have coving..however I’m not keen on it. I plan on painting a wall black and going for a very light and airy bohemian natural decor, woods, cotton etc. We also have this beam between the kitchen and living space, I think coving will look silly here and not in the kitchen. thoughts please??

Did the house originally have coving? If it did, and the ceiling has good height, then I would consider it. If it didn’t, and the ceilings aren’t high, then I wouldn’t. I’d be guided by the age and style of the house.

I think coving will make the ceiling look lower. That being said some formal rooms like lounges look (in my opinion) under decorated without coving- if you do decide to add it perhaps avoid the standard DIY store coving and find a coving with a small projection down the wall and a larger ceiling projection

I don't think that has beading on the top. I think the style is called Ogee. But it is at the bottom and think it finishes off nicely, however, the people who installed the floors before us didn't do a great job and they're quite uneven (oak wooden floors) so hoping they don't leave gaps along the bottom, that would be dreadful. We're removing all the old skirting and architrave in the house on the ground floor. There's no coving either so we have a blank space to work with really. We're going to try source something like the above, but would like to make sure we source good quality. The walls will be painted in Cornforth White from Farrow and Ball. The skirting, coving and architrave in a nice white, probably more matte white.

Hi Mike, any standard coving (there are many options from expanded polystyrene to plaster & gypsum based products) will be absolutely fine. More important is to ensure it is well fixed, and that you use a good quality bathroom paint to resist mildew etc. If you have a period property, I'd certaily recommend spending a little extra to get a higher quality, period moulded coving with a little more detail than the average modern one. It might cost a little more, but the effect will be to give a much more luxurious feel for limited cost. Google period style coving and try some of the links.

Thanks all, really helpful! Since we've just paid a few thousand pound for the wardrobes I'm not sure my husband would be too impressed if I painted the wardrobe doors right away. I think the previous owners painted the other doors/skirting/radiator cream, so we will definitely repaint those white. If I were to change the boiler door or handles, any ideas what might look better? Also, this may sound like a silly question but when painting the room, would you attempt to paint the box above the wardrobe or simply leave it white? The wardrobes beforehand weren't quite as deep and had coving yes.

I don’t think it’s necessary to change the wall colour, unless you want to? I also had a thought about putting a door on the area to create a little cloakroom? However, I can see it also leads into another room so it probably wouldn’t work anyway!

There was no coving prior, curling height is about 250cm so not big at all. I think I’m better off leaving it. Thank you!

I'm all for coving. We have original coving in our lounge area and a previous owner had removed the wall and chimney breast in the dining room to create one space. Unfortunately, they also removed the coving in that area and replaced it with a modern one- we have never gotten around to matching them up. We did have a picture rail installed and as you can see, we do use it.
