Help pls! I have a good size lounge but cannot decide how best to layout the furniture. I am selling all the furniture in this room so pls view it as a blank canvas. Where would you put the focal point (likely to be the TV!) and where would you put sofas / chairs? Do you think a corner sofa would work where the current tv is?

A common comment made on these sort of questions is to pull the lounge away from the walls..Whilst you still have the setting with multiple options try pulling it away from the walls to form a seating area focusing on your TV .You could set it out to mockup a corner suite sitting in the room, or in the area you suggested, to see how the shape works in the room. If the dimensions of what you are thinking is too different from your current lounge, use some tape to lay it out in the space and see how you move around the room with the it laid out. This might help give you an idea of if it would work.

Hi- with young children, the big open space in the center of the room is ideal for now. That said, you might want to pull your furniture off the walls a bit, perhaps a console table behind the sofas decorated with a table lamp, etc.

In terms of a focal point, I would think about
1. What do you want to see when you enter the room? Is it the TV? Or is it people? The answer will have something to do with the adjacent room too and how you use it. If it’s the TV, it’s probably on the right wall now, but if you reversed it and the sofa’s current positions, the room might seem more sociable and open. Plus your TV cabinetry will have much less depth than a sofa, so easier on traffic flow.
2. How much of the window wall do you want to see? Your room looks large enough that you could place consider placing some furniture in front of it. For example, an upholstered bench would square off the seating area and help create a separate little ”toy zone” behind it, but it wouldn’t block the lines of sight to the garden.

Hi Jade. The room is small and it is also the walkway to the back f the house, which further obstruct its functionality. If you are keen to keep the living room separated from the kitchen, then your furniture layout is probably the only way to go. I would advise you to consider taking down the wall to the kitchen and create an open plan. It will make the space feel spacious and you might even consider a different layout: Place the kitchen at the rear on the right wall, place your lounge on the opposite wall facing the kitchen, put a room-dividing furniture in between with the TV inside and place the dining table where the lounge is now. You can get a really contemporary looking comfortable space. I think shortening the lounge is a great idea. Could the new kitchen door go through the cupboard in the hall next to the shower room? This would make the new wall nicely balanced with the window in the new dining room. It’s probably too long for one seating area. I’d have a sofa opposite what used to the be the fire and a chair in front of the window. To avoid the corridor feel you need to add things in the middle of the space, so add a coffee table/ottoman (a round one I think would work better) and bring the sofa away from the wall a little. Use a rug to zone that area. You could have a reading area at the kitchen end of the room? If you paint the shorter walls a darker tone it will ”correct“ the rooms proportions. Mirrors on the long walls can help but think about what it reflects! I think painting the skirting boards in the wall colour will help too as your eyes are just drawn to the white atm

You have a lot of doors in that area! If you want to keep the fireplace and use it, you may wish to either wall up the double doors to the neighbouring reception room or fully open up to the reception room while closing off to the front part of the lounge. All this probably depends on the location of the kitchen and where you want to dine. You may get more useful responses by providing a full ground floor plan.
