Help pls! I have a good size lounge but cannot decide how best to layout the furniture. I am selling all the furniture in this room so pls view it as a blank canvas. Where would you put the focal point (likely to be the TV!) and where would you put sofas / chairs? Do you think a corner sofa would work where the current tv is?

A common comment made on these sort of questions is to pull the lounge away from the walls..Whilst you still have the setting with multiple options try pulling it away from the walls to form a seating area focusing on your TV .You could set it out to mockup a corner suite sitting in the room, or in the area you suggested, to see how the shape works in the room. If the dimensions of what you are thinking is too different from your current lounge, use some tape to lay it out in the space and see how you move around the room with the it laid out. This might help give you an idea of if it would work.

Hi- with young children, the big open space in the center of the room is ideal for now. That said, you might want to pull your furniture off the walls a bit, perhaps a console table behind the sofas decorated with a table lamp, etc.

In terms of a focal point, I would think about
1. What do you want to see when you enter the room? Is it the TV? Or is it people? The answer will have something to do with the adjacent room too and how you use it. If it’s the TV, it’s probably on the right wall now, but if you reversed it and the sofa’s current positions, the room might seem more sociable and open. Plus your TV cabinetry will have much less depth than a sofa, so easier on traffic flow.
2. How much of the window wall do you want to see? Your room looks large enough that you could place consider placing some furniture in front of it. For example, an upholstered bench would square off the seating area and help create a separate little ”toy zone” behind it, but it wouldn’t block the lines of sight to the garden.

Hi Jade. The room is small and it is also the walkway to the back f the house, which further obstruct its functionality. If you are keen to keep the living room separated from the kitchen, then your furniture layout is probably the only way to go. I would advise you to consider taking down the wall to the kitchen and create an open plan. It will make the space feel spacious and you might even consider a different layout: Place the kitchen at the rear on the right wall, place your lounge on the opposite wall facing the kitchen, put a room-dividing furniture in between with the TV inside and place the dining table where the lounge is now. You can get a really contemporary looking comfortable space. It’s probably too long for one seating area. I’d have a sofa opposite what used to the be the fire and a chair in front of the window. To avoid the corridor feel you need to add things in the middle of the space, so add a coffee table/ottoman (a round one I think would work better) and bring the sofa away from the wall a little. Use a rug to zone that area. You could have a reading area at the kitchen end of the room? If you paint the shorter walls a darker tone it will ”correct“ the rooms proportions. Mirrors on the long walls can help but think about what it reflects! I think painting the skirting boards in the wall colour will help too as your eyes are just drawn to the white atm

Hi Amber I can see why you’ve been wrestling with it as it is difficult to figure out the best options with such a long stretch of kitchen and lounge. An extension could make both these rooms appear longer/skinny and maybe darker. My friends added a similar extension with a large window on one half and patio doors on the other, with both the side walls being solid brick. This did make their original rooms darker so if you did decide to go down this route, perhaps consider a design incorporating more glass than brick? I did come up with an idea similar to what you had in mind but i don’t know if it is possible (I have left tiny parts of your dividing wall between your existing kitchen/lounge still in place in case supports are needed). There’s a rough drawing below to help you (and me!) visualise it. the kitchen is moved to the front of the house, the yellow rectangle represents a chair that you could tuck under the counter, or if necessary lose the counter and place an armchair here; alternatively you could place an armchair / swivel chair where yellow circle is? this could be whatever type of glass opening you like or combination window/door (you might be able to reuse part of what you already have?) dining table area this could be whatever you need it to be – a sofa with side tables, a sideboard with wall hung TV above, a floor to ceiling storage wall, etc bi-fold doors to close off the lounge (could go for half glass for added light) again, whatever is needed – another sofa, a media wall, a mix of units/desk and open shelving above this could be a place for a wall hung tv or fire or both! (if you did need to retain part of the original dividing wall to support a beam, you could make a shallow false wall behind 7 which would be great to hide any wiring, sockets, etc) could leave as original window if this works or make it into a glass door patio door to garden/bi-folds - match up with 8 a longer section of wall here may be useful depending on how you intend to use the space At the very least, i hope this offers some inspiration and stops the wrestling! Just consider what your family’s needs are and when you have decided on a layout, I would draw a ‘to scale’ plan with the actual size of your furnishings (incl. 5). This will make sure you are putting walls and sockets in the right place and help to determine what type/size openings work best. Best of luck and would be great to eventually see the final product

Firstly I would turn the sofa through 90 degrees for the best position for tv and looking out onto the terrace. then work out kitchen position. Perhaps stretch the kitchen across the entire wall to give plenty of prep space, build microwave into a wall cupboard. Imo having an island is wasting space in a small multipurpose room. You should still have enough space for a dining bench ( more compact than chairs) and Table for 4. Keep 2 chairs for guest dining ( perhaps folding) elsewhere until needed.
