Loft extension window help

We are having plans drawn up for an extension, including loft extension. The architect has designed the second floor windows to slant in line with the gable roof coming up from the first floor. I think the asymmetric nature of the windows may look a bit odd so wondered if anyone had any other suggestions. There is a roof window, so this wouldn’t be the only light source. Thanks!

Hi Jenny, I actually think the asymmetric window will look absolutely fine and will also look nice and interesting inside too. My only comment is to be mindful about window dressings!!! We have a huge triangular window in our loft conversion - it looks fantastic - but finding a good solution for blinds etc was really tricky, very expensive, and I’m not convinced we got it right!!!

hi Jenny,
I think the design is good . the window will provide lots of light and gives interest. you could frame the entire window pushing it outwards with a deep window frame and have it in a bold colour on the exterior side to be a bit more playful.

Planning is different in Scotland to the rest of UK - ( I'm based in England- but have worked on projects in Scotland ) so I'd suggest a quick trip to the local council offices to ask their advice or try the planning portal ( link below) - I should imagine they will suggest fire escape sized windows and ask about clearance heights for stairs leading up to this room to have sufficient head height etc . Possibly they will ask you to put in place fire doors elsewhere in the building too ? I think if I'm sure they will be most helpful. You will probably require a 'certificate of lawfulness' too - dependent of the size of your project and windows you'd like to put in - this will affect planning ! https://eplanning.scotland.gov.uk/WAM/

Just wondering, if we went back to the picture with the original design with a bedroom, bathroom and study area in the loft. Options one is bathroom under the eaves. The architect has suggested running the soil pipe down the outside of the building which I think a) would look ugly and b) would need extensive and expensive groundworks to join to main drains. I wound have thought running under the floorboards to join existing soil pipe behind the loo in the bathroom would make more sense? Option two is moving bathroom to the back by the window, into the study area. I was initially against this as it seemed to make more sense to enjoy the view with a bedroom/ study but I’m now wondering if this is actually the most sensible? If so I’m wondering about the layout for the dressing area/ reading nook/study area and if anyone has any good ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

This looks like a lovely sized room. I’m sure this layout would work well but do you really need a bath in there? I would suggest a really fabulous shower and use any room saved for additional storage ( Your plumber could even run a hot water pipe from the central heating system through a tall cupboard which will keep your towels snuggly and warm). I would leave the loo where it is. then put the cupboard and double vanities where the bath is (60cm cupboard and 120 double vanity) and a long walk-in shower along the wall where you currently have the sink. One little addition which I have in my bathroom is a motion activated light situated low down near the loo (mine is actually underneath a wall hung loo). At night any bathroom trips have a little bit of ambient light to get you where you need to be without a glaring main light to wake you up. Good luck with your project. Im sure it will be fabulous

Hi Twamleyk, Theoretically, the loft conversion that you have described could fall within permitted development rights, subject to some design limits and any local restrictions. Therefore you might not need to go through a planning application process. But this is an unusual case with the rooms below needing altering as well, so a pre-application enquiry with your local planning authority would be highly recommended. Inspections and calculations from a structural engineer would also be needed, but timber frame construction could be used to keep the additional load (weight) to levels which should be acceptable for the existing structure. Have you considered just adding 1 or more velux rooflights and a fixed loft ladder/space saver stairs, or does this not add enough space for your requirements? Don’t let it put you off though!!! A neighbour had a similar conversion to us and opted for 3 traditional windows instead of a triangular one like ours. Ours blends in more from the outside because the glass kind of fades into the roof tile (not explaining that very well - but ultimately when looking from the garden, you notice their windows more than ours). Also - theirs looks more normal inside too, whereas ours is quite a feature.
