Garden Advice please

Hi All, I am looking for some advice on what to do with my garden. As you can see it's very long but narrow. I am looking for the most cost effective/cheapest options please. Any ideas will be much appreciated

Hi Sarah,

You have a nice space with a beautiful established tree, which is great! With a narrow long garden, it is good to divide it in sections. At the moment, the path down the middle with nothing for your eyes to rest on in the way, is taking your gaze directly to the end of the garden!). What will these sections be depends on what you want from your garden (space for entertaining, sunbathing, area to sit in shade, vegetable beds etc) and the conditions of your garden as well (aspect, wind exposure, microclimates etc).

I would be tempted to increase your patio area. Maybe using decking (budget friendly) instead of concrete slabs, and make this one section. Where you have the table to the bottom of the garden, I would either pave it or at least make a gravel covered sitting area (budget friendly) from it, and that would be another section. Planting borders along the middle with maybe a bench or somewhere to sit in, or areas to grow vegetables (again, this depends on what you want/need from your garden and your garden's conditions).

Hi I would put a planted green screen of a nice flowering hedge which also has berries in the winter like Berberis. It will give you privacy and its not totally solid as a fence or wall would be and will give a much softer look. It also gives security as it has small prickly barbs You say your window sills are too narrow to take window boxes so why not put a nice long wrought iron planter under the full width of the window, attach to the wall, (It looks like the windows are quite low) or if not put a free standing planter under the window. I would not get rid of the front lawn and just have concrete slabs as you already have all the drive paved, it will just look like to much concrete and harsh unless you add some plants or create maybe a circular flower bed Too much concrete prevents good drainage too Adding a porch would be a great idea, perhaps just glass which will give a modern contemporary feel Also once you have changed that paint colour it will look a lot better

It looks a very good start. Now think about adding more interest to the gravel, perhaps by interspersing the 'lollipop trees' with neat but interesting shrubs. These could be scented such as Sarcoccoca (winter scent), Daphne odora (spring scent)... And adding a border in front of the house with appropriate plants. I would need to now the orientation of the garden and whether the soil is alkaline/acid/neutral and clay/loam/sand/chalk before recommending plants. If you do not need to park a vehicle in front of the house, and with the right soil and aspect you could add a rectangular herb garden.

I bought a dwarf Apple tree from www.blackmoor.co.uk this year and it was an excellent quality tree. Only a baby tree but we got 3 absolutely delicious apples from it! It is called Spartan and the apples are such a lovely red colour. And Apple trees are not poisonous to dogs if they accidentally chew some of it. Shrubs could also be an option as many grow to 10ft or more. Things like Viburnum Tinus - evergreen with pinky white flowers in winter Ceanothus - evergreen with lovely blue flowers in May Photinia - evergreen with red tipped leaves in spring Fatsia japonica - evergreen and tough despite its exotic looks There are lots of shrubs that will do the job but I’ve grown the ones above and they are easy.
