RELM Interiors recently converted this loft space to make room for an extra bedroom and en suite shower room. The stair case from the landing up to the loft was restructured in order to make more room in the loft, resulting in a larger bedroom, storage cupboards and an en suite shower room complete with sky light.

Depending on the property (and the budget), both options have their merits. A big loft space can be more easily converted to a room but often the structure or space isn't sufficient and an dormer or extension is needed. This can offer a whole new floor to the building and with some imagination you can transform the property completely. www.pwjarchitects.com

Hi Chris Martin, First of all if your property does not fall within a Conservation Area or is Listed, then you are allowed to build a loft Conversion and an outrigger similar to your adjoining neighbour on the right hand side provided that the volume of the proposed outrigger and the Existing Loft with a dormer roof do not exceed 40.00 cubic metres to falls under ' Permitted Development ' where Planning Permission is not required. I have done several of such projects to confirm that you will not require Planning Approval as such. However you will have to modify the staircase from first Floor Landing to First Floor if you want the finish floor level of the Outrigger to be at the same level as that of the Finish Floor level of the Existing Loft. Hi Kay! It depends on the head room and there are a few unknowns here so you'll need more info to really make a decision on. Potentially you could shave a bit off the front bedroom to add a stair in above the existing stair. Then you might be able to make an ensuite above your current bathroom and have a dormer extension to the rear.
