Ideas needed :)

Hi all, any advice welcome to reconfigure space. We would ideally like to create larger kitchen space into garden toom - but not sure of the potential kitchen layout. Would also like ideas re: creating larger bathroom - also ensuite and dressing area - we are able to lose a bedroom.

Hello Emma,

Please find attached a quick sketch of how you can connect the exiting spaces. This is an idea based on a plan but to really decide if this would be possible we would need to make a structural survey.

Between the kitchen and the dinning would be interesting to create a big opening and connect the 2 spaces. Where I added the text GLASS in there would be a glass partition between the kitchen, garden room and the living room. This would bring a lot of light into the hallway and visual communication between all the spaces.

I have attached 3 images with the glass partition because I do not have images of the house and I do not know what style you like.

I think you have a lovely house with a lot of possibilities. This proposal is just one idea but there can be many more depending how you envision this space and your budget.

Hi Laura. Congratulations on the new home! Have you thought about putting the sofa on the back wall and moving the TV to where the sofa is? I think it would work nicely with the shelves. You can then add a floor lamp and picture gallery on the back wall similar to what's pictured with a tall potted plant in the other corner to make a nice focal point. I'd go for a pale grey For the walls, dulux dusted moss 2 is nice but check undertones with your sofa. Your dining chair looks more of a deep coral so would bring a little in for cushions (maybe white and coral patterned to lighten the sofa) and also some texture, a faux sheepskin is always good for a scandi look. You could then add splashes of green or blue for art etc. Some faux stems would be great on the dining table (I like cox and cox's eucalyptus in their glass bottle vase for something simple and they give height). Hard to tell from table pics but could you add an arc light to zone the dining area as you don't have any ceiling lights? Your kitchen looks great, I have to admit if it were mine though I'd be tempted to paint it a soft white and remove some of the wall units and have some shelves instead.

I'd make Bed3 the hallway into a new ensuite bedroom above garage - the space in Bed3 could be used as walk-through dressing room or a Study space. I'd make the new bedroom the big primary bedroom. I'd leave Bed1 and Bed4 as two bedrooms, then you have two ensuite bedrooms, three bedrooms to share the family bathroom, plus a walk-through study/dressing area. Think you need to clarify if you need 6 separate bedrooms for sleeping in though, as that would be more difficult - fine if you leave Bed4 separate and keep Bed1 as primary ensuite bedroom, but then you have too few bathrooms for so many bedrooms, as others have already said. Or you carve a bit out of Bed2 which becomes the hallway through to two one/two bedrooms above garage - but then Bed2 is smaller and it's created a long corridor which you would prefer to avoid, but there are architectural details you can add to make it feel less of an hotel corridor. If you really need more bedrooms then I'd also look at using the Dining room for one, or converting part/all of garage as a downstairs bedroom, but it would be useful then to create a shower room downstairs too.

Hello, We are embracing the open plan living more and more because it's more sociable, but to make it work for most of people (and houses) there needs to be compromises. Your reception/dining room is just not big enough to have a kitchen, diner and family room in it. For it to work at all you'd have to keep the kitchen where it is right now with an opening to the right part of the reception/diner. This will make you lose the wall in the kitchen which in turn might mean that you have less space to put storage in. It is a tricky layout to make it really work and would need compromises.

Since it's a detached house, which side has the best garden views?

One of many options. All depends on views, structural challenges and budget.

I would advise to choose between ensuite and dressing room, as having both would mean would be rather small.
