Hi everyone 👋 I am trying to decide lighting for our home renovation and am a bit stuck on how best to light our wee nook off the dining room - see red circled area in the photos one wall will be glazing, there will be a velux too as it’s a sloped ceiling. Originally I thought a pendant above where we could put a seat would work but I’m worried it’ll be a bit like sitting in an interreogation chair! My other idea was a scissor wall sconce on the side wall or two sconces on the back wall. What do you think? And if I went with wall sconces would I need an overhead light too do you think? Thanks in Advance!!

How big will s that area and what were you planning to do with it? It looks strange...., it could work if the walls were flat and there was no bit of wall between the areas.

To be honest I can't imagine why anyone would want to sit in that tiny area when you have a lovely big open space? I'd rethink the plan. Though without measurements it does make it difficult.

If it's unused space there would be no point putting the glazing there. With a full glazed wall and a velux in the tiny area you wouldn't need a light, or have a light, but no need for velux?

I just think the space won't work, I guess it's an old kitchen space that you are trying to do something with? Sorry

Hi Ellie, thank you for taking the time to read and reply. It’s an old utility that we’ve halved to make this space into a reading nook or study space. The dimensions are 1.4m x 2m. It’s only really meant to be used by one person as know it’s a dinky space. The glazing and velux are really just to allow more light into the whole area for more of the day.

We’d want to be able to use it in the evening so would need some sort of light I think, also for cleaning I need to see the dirt easily.

I think wood floors are great. Solid if you can. Check which way the joists go as you may have to put noggins in to lay the wood in the best direction for the room. Also look into the options for soundproofing for the benefit of any rooms below or that it might make that room a bit echoey. Or carpet perhaps a beige not too light with a bit of 'powder blue in the twist. Change the darkest cushions for a similar blue. To enhance the modernity can you get rid of the arch over the stairs or even open up the side of the staircase putting in a bannister or floor to ceiling glass panels. If you paint the walls White be sure to invest in a number of sample pots to try different whites it's amazing how different they can look on different walls and in different lights.

I would get a Victorian style iron bed and put it opposite the chimney breast. You need a wardrobe on the wall opposite the window, a chest of drawers on the left of the alcove and at least one bedside table. I would try to get Victorian mahogany furniture to match your idea book. I would try to gets neutral carpet or floorboards but a Turkish carpet will add to the Victorian oppulence. I would paint the walls in a flat paint from one of the manufacturers that does a heritage range. Full length curtains can be made to look more expensive the addition of fringing. Lastly you should add a chandelier in either brass, opal glass or crystals. A brass desk lamp by your bed will be useful.

Hi, I understand your frustration at your neighbours miss matching fence. Being the sunniest part of the garden it only accentuates the fault with a spot light. You could add some horizontal trellis to the upper part or if your budget can stretch do the whole fence. Painted soft wood can be a really economical solution and give a great effect.Your square patch of grass is only adding to the limitations of your garden. its drawing attention to the four corners and not creating an mystery. Having a curve to your grass will lead the eye away and create the illusion of more space.I would suggest building a curved seating area on your south side in the L shape by your shed. Railway sleepers positioned vertically with a chamfered top edge create a dramatic feature and are a really cost effect solution to screening. I would mask the end of your garden with these positioned across the whole width with an entrance to the right ( North side) The sleepers would then decrease in height as they curve round masking your shed and forming a built in seating area. They can also be stained adding to the dramatic effect. Black can look great if balanced well with bold planting. You are very fortunate to have a lovely hedge on your right, it could look fantastic. Wow thanks everyone for your comments - I certainly am learning a lot and getting loads of new points to research! :) I like your post Chris Goodchild - I have to admit sun pipes are new to me so having now done some research into them, it will be definitely be useful in my project! Thank you 'AVINU lifestyle technology' your post is very interesting and useful - it gives me a brilliant starting point to research more on reflected light and the link to 'Lighting By Plum' is very inspirational! I love the projects they've done! I've seen the plaster finishes with strip-lighting round in photos and other peoples houses and I do think they are a fab way of bringing a cosy feel to a modern room as it's more subtle than spot lights - especially if they are on a dimmer. I'd do a scissor wall lamp on the piece of wall that sticks out into the space - the bit on the bottom left when looking at your floorplan. Then you can hang art on the back wall and the other wall (that backs onto the utility room) which you will see from the open plan space. Just make sure the wall sconce is adjustable enough so that you can position it where you want the light - maybe you'll have a desk on that back bit? You can always supplement lighting with a desk light too. An alternative is to use directional spotlights in the ceiling and point them at the walls so that they light up art on walls and don't dazzle anyone sitting directly underneath.

Thanks colourwise that’s such a good point about keeping the walls that are visible to the other rooms free for artwork! I’ve literally just had the plumber round and I will need to put the radiator on the wall you were thinking for the scissor light, it’s a tall radiator rather than short though so might mean having to place the light quite high… is there a standard height for a wall light?

The back wall will have a loveseat against it for reading first off but maybe a desk in the future.
