Hi everyone 👋 I am trying to decide lighting for our home renovation and am a bit stuck on how best to light our wee nook off the dining room - see red circled area in the photos one wall will be glazing, there will be a velux too as it’s a sloped ceiling. Originally I thought a pendant above where we could put a seat would work but I’m worried it’ll be a bit like sitting in an interreogation chair! My other idea was a scissor wall sconce on the side wall or two sconces on the back wall. What do you think? And if I went with wall sconces would I need an overhead light too do you think? Thanks in Advance!!

How big will s that area and what were you planning to do with it? It looks strange...., it could work if the walls were flat and there was no bit of wall between the areas.

To be honest I can't imagine why anyone would want to sit in that tiny area when you have a lovely big open space? I'd rethink the plan. Though without measurements it does make it difficult.

If it's unused space there would be no point putting the glazing there. With a full glazed wall and a velux in the tiny area you wouldn't need a light, or have a light, but no need for velux?

I just think the space won't work, I guess it's an old kitchen space that you are trying to do something with? Sorry

Hi Ellie, thank you for taking the time to read and reply. It’s an old utility that we’ve halved to make this space into a reading nook or study space. The dimensions are 1.4m x 2m. It’s only really meant to be used by one person as know it’s a dinky space. The glazing and velux are really just to allow more light into the whole area for more of the day.

We’d want to be able to use it in the evening so would need some sort of light I think, also for cleaning I need to see the dirt easily.

The colour temperature of the LEDs suit the finishes of the first kitchen, but the second kitchen , with wooden effects, needs a much warmer LED. A fine line when working in kitchens as the cooler the LED, the better the preparation light. Tough one!

I do have several comments/suggestions for you. It is worth planning where your table is going and lighting appropriately. If this is your main dining area, or you plan to entertain you will definitely want to be able to dim the lights. I'm not sure how serious a cook you are, but you might prefer to have spotlights over the island for task lighting and pendants over the table. Height of the lights and bulb brightness would affect this decision. Speaking totally as a layperson, it looks like you would need some lighting between the island and the right hand side of the room. LED spotlights do not light laterally as far as you think they might and you could end up with a dull area. Finally, you will be asked if you want warm or white spotlights, so be sure you know how your choice will affect the colour of things like the floor and cupboard surfaces. I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you

Ok firstly, we can work out the size of the room. (6.3m x 3m. Then multiply the answer by 25. So 18.9x25=472.5w) this will give you the amount of watts required as a rough guide for the room. Obviously layers of light are best so, the down lights over the worktops are a great place to start. Pendants, which can be switched separately to the down lights, over a table are good too. Under cabinet lighting and even lighting the plinths of the kitchen units at ground level or above the wall units add another dimension to the 'normal' look. Floors and ceilings are great for diffusing and reflecting light. Kitchens are always places where we struggle with shadows so again the spotlights over the worktops are best to help avoid this, but at the same time don't forget the rest of the room. You can always take light away, but to add it at a later stage is much much harder. Dimmable LED's will allow you to play more again with the lighting in the kitchen area if you choose to go for the option with more down lights. Consider the separate switching idea. There will be times when you want to make that last cuppa in the evening and the last thing you want is to walk in switch on the light and everything comes on at once! Romantic dinners, hectic family dinner times or a party are all different times when different levels of light are needed. Sorry that's a lot of info in a small space of time! But your right there is lots to be considered and you want to get it right. I'd do a scissor wall lamp on the piece of wall that sticks out into the space - the bit on the bottom left when looking at your floorplan. Then you can hang art on the back wall and the other wall (that backs onto the utility room) which you will see from the open plan space. Just make sure the wall sconce is adjustable enough so that you can position it where you want the light - maybe you'll have a desk on that back bit? You can always supplement lighting with a desk light too. An alternative is to use directional spotlights in the ceiling and point them at the walls so that they light up art on walls and don't dazzle anyone sitting directly underneath.

Thanks colourwise that’s such a good point about keeping the walls that are visible to the other rooms free for artwork! I’ve literally just had the plumber round and I will need to put the radiator on the wall you were thinking for the scissor light, it’s a tall radiator rather than short though so might mean having to place the light quite high… is there a standard height for a wall light?

The back wall will have a loveseat against it for reading first off but maybe a desk in the future.
