colour help please!

I have finally persuaded my partner that we cannot successfully decorate our house (we moved in a while ago and have half ripped off wallpaper everywhere). So I’m thrilled but now panicking as trying to decide on colours - we have a wide hallway and landing so thought a bold colour but then everything clashes as want colours in the rooms. Would white be too clinical / boring? Or thought Benjamin Moore’s first light - does this tend to clash with other colours? Thinking a burnt orange in the living room to the right. Any thoughts v welcome!

Are you also intending to paint the spindles, handrails etc as they are dark wood and you have a mixture of a wooden door, some white doors and then white skirting and architrave. Painting the stair components could lighten the area but what’s above them? Are there lots more of the same?

I’m not familiar with Benjamin Moore paint so had to Google the colour. It may be because it’s on a screen but there does look as though it has an undertone of pink in it.

What about a green?

It depends on a lot of variables. Is the carpet staying? What are the other rooms like? What is the feel of the house? It's almost identicle to my hall!

Hello tracysid, I think the windows and front door are good and work particularly well with the brick.. My suggestion is to paint garage door and render a brick colour... Then place some bigger pots with something nice to introduce a bit more greenery.. Maybe even cultivate a little box hedge along where the little pots are now. can be in rectangular slate planters along the line of those low grey bricks.. I think this would look very stylish indeed and definitely don't paint the windows or door white, what is fantastic about the way they are now, is that they blend beautifully with the brick.... :))

Heather_b, are you planning to add blinds or curtains to the windows / patio doors? Don’t think I can see any in the photos. When we did our renovation, we didn’t have any for 2-3 years as we aren’t overlooked but decided to last winter (more for heat efficiency reasons) & found that has provided a much more ‘finished’ look to the space - even though they’re only plain grey! That and a few pictures, perhaps a tall floor plant opposite the island should give you a more ‘homely’ space.

I'm not a great fan of feature walls, but if that's something YOU like, go for it, it's your house! As for painting, again, I would say, whether it 'should' all be painted the same colour is neither here nor there, do youwant it all the same colour? Or are you keen to differentiate the two areas? Is one area lighter and brighter than the other? Could you perhaps paint the brighter part a darker version of the same colour and vice versa with a lighter paint in the less bright part of the room? What flooring are you going to have? That may influence your choice of all colours. Have a look at pictures on Houzz and work out what you like from those, that may help you make decisions for your decor.

I agree a warm neutral/green/duck egg/ even blush type tone would work wonders. I think grey is difficult to get right in north facing rooms unless you go for a strong warm undertone, by which time it’s arguably griege rather than grey! I also think that regardless of the room’s orientation, that cool grey doesn’t work with the warmer tones of carpet, sofa and fire surround. I’ve just used a copy of Little Greene’s ‘Joanna’ in my sort of dual aspect living room and it’s lovely- it can be beige, grey, or (in some lights) nearly but not quite pink.
