How to add colour. Help please

We have recently renovated our home and although I love my new kitchen/living space I can’t help but be a little saddened by the lack of colour.
Unfortunately not great at making colour decisions (hence the white/grey combo everywhere) so was hoping for some help please.
Happy to paint/wallpaper/ accessorise. All suggestions will be gratefully received.

Lovely room. The warm wood floor is a great choice as it adds warmth. It‘s the bare walls that are crying out for pictures or shelves. Coloured cushions on the sofa would also be good, either in bright shades or soften ones such as blush pink, pale blue and pale green. A tall plant or two would also look good. I like mare’s large map. Great for children too. I wonder whether a darker wall paint at the sofa end would cosy it up a bit?

It's beautiful and subtle - don't go over the top. If you want it to look 'classic' a plum colour would compliment. Personally I love the curtains they are lovely. A cool teal colour (perhaps lamp, cushions) would look beautiful with the wood, or if you want to go more edgy then a splash of strong mustard would work.

Is there grey in the upholstery fabric? I was thinking that a beige/taupe rug would be good. Difficult to say based on online pics only, but this John Lewis one for example looks pretty good to me. Might be different in real life though. But something like that would work. As long as you get a large enough rug. It needs to be larger than the one in the furniture photo. It looks best if all front legs of the sofa and chairs are on the rug.

The room looks very modern and spacious and having 2 colours in a kitchen is very popular. With regards to wall units (see image below where shelves have been used) & fridge/freezers, it really is down to personal preference but American fridge/freezers are very bulky, but they do give a lot of fridge space, although the freezers do tend to be a little small. Shelving can look nice and it could keep costs down. Decisions, decisions :-) Here are some pics of shaker kitchens that our customers have sent us with 2 different colours that they have used in their kitchens. Hmmm....sorry, it’s a large world map poster. You can get wall murals done as well. I think it’s a great way to get children interested in the world.

What colours do you like? You could basically add anything to that palate? Or a mix of colours... change the bench cushion fabric, add some art work, add some cushions on the sofa, etc

Can you take a picture of the seating area from further back such as from behind the island so we can see how it connects to the kitchen/dining area. It looks like you have a lot of empty space there but maybe that’s not the case? Hard to tell from the two photos.

What a great space you have! The finishing touches should be really easy to do.

With 2 little kids myself, I would be wary of adding any shelving around the sofa area, lest they inadvertently knock it while playing around. However with a quick trip to Ikea you can get a number of inexpensive and very lightweight picture frames to create a family gallery. You can add colour and create a more curated look by ordering custom matting online, perhaps a white outer mat with a coloured inner mat. Fix the frames with the walls with Command strips and the kids are less likely to knock them off the wall.

For your table, perhaps a long and low centrepiece with succulents?

I think a wooden plank shelf would look terrific above your tv, and it would provide space for plants, decorative items, etc. Alternatively, wall mounted planters would work well. Go for something with depth to help balance the TV below.

For the kitchen, I would add a two tier shelf in the corner to the right of the sink. Perhaps wood and metal similar to your bar stools. You could put a green plant on the top shelf, and maybe re-pot the plants on your extractor hood to coordinate.

Following on from the gallery wall you could add a couple of small bits of art work you like or photos from holidays or happy places, mixed in with frames containing the kids’ art work, and then change it round when they do something new you like?

Great kitchen space and to be honest, it doesn’t need much.

I agree with Gabby’s suggestion about your kids’ artwork.

Framing it, often gives it quite a surprisingly ’professional’ feel, particularly if they made larger ones and it will certainly give your offspring a sense of pride! :-)

I’m not a great fan of family photo galleries, but that’s just me.

Sorry I can’t offer any help with colour advice but I cheekily wanted to ask where you bought your bar stools from, I think they’re lovely and would work in our kitchen. Btw, I think you have created a lovely space.

I love black and greys in houses, however during this refurb I put quite a bit of colour in!!

Add real plants in wooden or terra-cotta pots around the house. That will add the warmth to room. You can add colors through furnishings (cushions and a runner on dining table) and maybe crockery or even paper napkins. You can choose prints with colours of your existing furnishings and some more colours (say orange or mustard) to add that pop of colour to your lovely place.

heather_b, yes your last photo does show the space can do with some ‘cheering up’. It’s by no means depressing but, mainly the walls are rather bare looking.

So yes as suggested here, plant(s), large artwork, mirror.

Heather_b, are you planning to add blinds or curtains to the windows / patio doors? Don’t think I can see any in the photos. When we did our renovation, we didn’t have any for 2-3 years as we aren’t overlooked but decided to last winter (more for heat efficiency reasons) & found that has provided a much more ‘finished’ look to the space - even though they’re only plain grey! That and a few pictures, perhaps a tall floor plant opposite the island should give you a more ‘homely’ space.

Ellie, drawing not to scale and measurements in mm. We weren’t sure everything would fit but have zero problems with space and bumping into chairs, others etc.
