This discussion neglects the beam angle of the bulb in the fixture. These can vary from about 15 degrees to around 50 degrees. Additionally, tilting a Gimbel fixture does not necessarily cut off light as the beam is a three-dimensional paraboloid for which the math is much more complex than this simplistic tangent formula. The guidelines here will put you in the ballpark however. Unfortunately many "lighting experts" don't really know lighting. RPI (Rennselaer Polytechnic) has a lighting division with good information on line for those interested. I attended their one-day course prior to designing our own lighting for a kitchen renovation. No Problem :) One thing for both of you is that the brightness of LED bulbs is not really rated in Watts any more. Lamp brightness is measured in Lumens. When you're looking at the specification of an LED fitting, whether it is a dedicated LED lamp or a replacement for a standard bulb pay attention to the Lumens output. Better quality LEDs will generally have a higher Lumens output. Also check colour temperature measured in Kelvin (the lower the number the warmer the colour - 2700K is warm white and similar to halogen bulbs, 4000K is cooler and more suitable for security lighting). Also although not specifically relevant in this case, for interior fittings check the Colour Rendering Index. This dictates how well colours are shown by the light fitting. 100 is the same as daylight and most halogen lights measure around this figure. High quality LEDs are around 95 and lower quality start at 80. Finally, some LED replacement bulbs can be bigger than their incandescent equivalents so you will need to check how much space you have in the fitting to see if the LED will fit. Hi We provide LED lamps in 2700K (very warm - yellow) , 3000K (warm white - yellow), 4000K (cool white - white will a hint of yellow), 5000K (soft daylight - very white), 6000K (daylight - more harsh white with hint of blue). Between different makes of LEDs - there will be variations too. What we have seen is that this is very much on personal preference and also how the light interacts with the colour of the units in your room. You should try some options if possible and see what you prefer. If you want to warm your room up go for warm white. If you want to have a sharper look go for cool whiite 4000K (we are seeing this is getting more popular), if you want seriously white then go for daylight (5-6000K). One thing we recommend against is using all in one LED fixture like the H2, because the LED market is moving fast, In 4 years time, if one fixture fails and this unit is not made anymore, it may be replaced with a non-matching fixture. With a LED GU10, you can just change the bulb without having to replace the fixture. Hello, I’ve just had these fitted, my electrician is very helpful, he recommended these ones. They are both dimmable. 1st photo - These ones are fire rated as there is a room above and have been fitted in the kitchen. They are very low profile and apparently all his clients love them! Apparently they were pricey a few months ago but they have come down a lot in price now. There is no ‘bulb’, it’s all one piece and looks very neat. 2 photo - these are also good and have been fitted in the extension part with pitched roof as the lights need to be angled. I would go for warm lights not cool. I’ve just had them installed today and just getting use to all the brightness along with a white kitchen with white walls lol.
