Need Help Choosing LED PIR outdoor Light

Any Recommendations for LED PIR outdoor light? Are any brands better than others ? Its for a long narrow alleyway - side passage of house. What LED Wattage would you recommend? Alley Way half a metre wide and about 7 metres long. Thank you

Are you using the light for security only, or is the light also for general access?

Hi Jackie we installed exterior and interior LED lights throughout our home however I couldn't source a decent led pir. I eventually chose the Astro soprano which isn't led but as these lights only come on for 2 minutes once activated I felt the bulb type wasn't as important. Hope that helps somewhat.

Try ansell or firstlight. They seem to be around £18. Not as nice as the one in the photo above but still have the same vibe. Our electrician recommended ansell. I can't voucher for either of these suppliers as I haven't gone with them instead choosing Astro lighting. Good luck with your project, we are at the same stage, it's good to be near the end!

Hi, We have a 1930s red brick house in the South East of England and the current uPVC (with lead bars in them) windows need replacing. We have decided to go again for uPVC but in white woodgrain. However, my choice would be for plain glass (without any lines of lead or with bars) in as few panels as possible to let as much light in as possible and also not to overcrowd the windows considering that we will have horizontal blinds inside. My husband thinks we should keep the led lines or add Georgian white bars inside. I need help as I don't want the new windows to destroy the look so I want to get it right... Thanks! Ari

Thank you both very much. I think we will stick with white (as we are not changing the right hand side door for the time being) and we will remove the small top sections on the windows to keep them bigger and cleaner and add lead lines for those front windows (and no lead line at the back of the house as there is a modern extension anyhow).

Ok firstly, we can work out the size of the room. (6.3m x 3m. Then multiply the answer by 25. So 18.9x25=472.5w) this will give you the amount of watts required as a rough guide for the room. Obviously layers of light are best so, the down lights over the worktops are a great place to start. Pendants, which can be switched separately to the down lights, over a table are good too. Under cabinet lighting and even lighting the plinths of the kitchen units at ground level or above the wall units add another dimension to the 'normal' look. Floors and ceilings are great for diffusing and reflecting light. Kitchens are always places where we struggle with shadows so again the spotlights over the worktops are best to help avoid this, but at the same time don't forget the rest of the room. You can always take light away, but to add it at a later stage is much much harder. Dimmable LED's will allow you to play more again with the lighting in the kitchen area if you choose to go for the option with more down lights. Consider the separate switching idea. There will be times when you want to make that last cuppa in the evening and the last thing you want is to walk in switch on the light and everything comes on at once! Romantic dinners, hectic family dinner times or a party are all different times when different levels of light are needed. Sorry that's a lot of info in a small space of time! But your right there is lots to be considered and you want to get it right. One thing for both of you is that the brightness of LED bulbs is not really rated in Watts any more. Lamp brightness is measured in Lumens. When you're looking at the specification of an LED fitting, whether it is a dedicated LED lamp or a replacement for a standard bulb pay attention to the Lumens output. Better quality LEDs will generally have a higher Lumens output. Also check colour temperature measured in Kelvin (the lower the number the warmer the colour - 2700K is warm white and similar to halogen bulbs, 4000K is cooler and more suitable for security lighting). Also although not specifically relevant in this case, for interior fittings check the Colour Rendering Index. This dictates how well colours are shown by the light fitting. 100 is the same as daylight and most halogen lights measure around this figure. High quality LEDs are around 95 and lower quality start at 80.

Finally, some LED replacement bulbs can be bigger than their incandescent equivalents so you will need to check how much space you have in the fitting to see if the LED will fit.

As these are security lights, I'm not going into dimming.... : )
