Final kitchen plans-help me out!! A few questions!!

Kitchen downights/pendants above island: Do you put both on dimmers/just pendants or neither on dimmers?

Tiled splashback + Upstands: tile above the upstand or tile directly above worktop? (Going for herringbone style).

We have very few hinged cabinets and are using a combination of knobs and cups. In order to break up the amount of cups due to lots of drawers would you put knobs on the pull outs (centred)? Just wondering if the knobs aren’t placed in same place (in corner) it’ll look odd?

Shelves: how high above your worktop have you placed your shelves and found they ‘work’...I’m just 5ft!

Finally!! If anyone has used a latch on a cabinet, do both doors open together or have you used something to ensure one stays closed. I love the idea of a latch on a cupboard below the sink where we keep child non-friendly cleaning products.

All lights on dimmers wherever possible.

Tile directly above worktop - no upstand.

Not sure what you mean by pull outs, post a pic of kitchen elevations.

Shelves can vary a bit but do need to work for you - depends on whether you're going to use the stuff on shelf every day or if it's more for displaying items, what the ceiling height is, what else is on the wall beside them (cabinets, extractor, etc).

No experience of latches, other than having an internal sliding bolt type fixing on the inside of the door you want to keep shut, but then you need to put your hand into the cabinet to open it?

What material is your countertop? In general I don't see a problem with the tap being on the counter (just make sure that it actually reaches as far as it needs to!), but if it is a wood worktop then you might consider having a piece of stone there; wooden worktops can show water damage fairly quickly, and it's not always feasible to remember to wipe it after using the tap each time!

Hi Greg, amazing job! Everything looks fab. I was wondering, did you consider pros/cons of waterproof blinds in the shower area? Like you we are nearing completion of our renovation and one of our windows is in the shower. We have opaque glass but not sure if we should have blinds too. Thanks!

Shan M - I never did do the brick slips in the end! I managed to salvage a wall to the side of the kitchen so ended up just painting the back kitchen wall in the same colour as the units (well itt's a different tone due to the paint finish) and it's quite dramatic and I love it. If I had done brick slips, they would have gone on afterwards and been fitted around the units to save money. retrospectively, the brick slips cost the same as a full brick and although the original builder said it would be cheaper to tile with slips rather than to build a brick wall, the actual bricklayer (after he finished the job) disagreed! He said he could have done block work up the units and bricked all the exposed areas. Probably would have cost the same as tilers are not cheap! Doh.

Ikea Kitchens are excellent, the attention to quality is superb. Lots of suppliers only offer doors in particular sizes, which is why when you go to an appointment at Wickes for example and you then take it to Howdens, they often have to swap the cabinets around as they don't all do all the sizes. Factoring in that you may want to change the doors in a few years at this point is in my opinion daft. You buy a kitchen and it should last 10-15 years. Magnet and Howdens offer great kitchens too. However, I have personal experience of fitting an Ikea Kitchen last year and was very impressed. I've used Howdens several times too. There are many companies however, that offer custom sizes when ordering replacements such as Kitchen door workshop and Kitchen Door Outlet to name but two. Saying that you can't replace the doors, just simply isn't accurate.
