fire place demolition

Hi, how would you change this fireplace? I’m thinking smash off the tiles (how’s best?!) or paint them white? Leave the arch? Thanks!

I’m not a fan of 1930s fireplaces. I had three in my house when we moved in and we decided to remove them completely. The living room one was replaced by the one below which although not a period piece I just found more attractive. Not too expensive either.

Hi Rosie, I would start by getting rid of all the existing ornaments. I would then put two pictures in frames on the top two shelves. I would lean them back against the wall rather than use a stand. I would then add an ornament either side. Perhaps something glass or mirrored to create some light and interest. I would then buy a couple or lovely big log baskets and put them either side of the log burner make more of a feature of it. This will then draw the eye to the log burner rather than the fireplace. How odd to put carpet in a fireplace. I would suggest you made a hearth with a piece of stone - sandstone or slate or even tiles maybe - then you can dress it with candles, a pile of logs like Rukmini said, or a fire grate (loads of secondhand ones on eBay) and dress that with logs. I rather like the example below with a cluster of plants. You could also try an electric faux wood burner as minnie101 suggests. They are reasonably cheap (£100-£300) and most have an option to switch the light on without the heat if you so choose. Dimplex is a well known brand.

The pipe in the marble one may be a gas pipe where someone may have had a gas fire inserted there. If it is, then a gas engineer will be able to remove it and seal the end for you. It may be an idea to get all the chimneys swept before you decide to use them for a fire.

I'd remove the fire tools too (they should be on the floor, I think). A plant that will hang down the side (perhaps a Scindapsus or Philodendron) on the part where the tools now are would be enough decoration on the fireplace for me. I would however prefer a wall to wall TV shelf on the TV side and art on that wall. Just something simple. A shelf below it for the technical stuff? A large basket with logs on the left side maybe? See my bad photoshop effort :-)

The wooden surround was natural pine from B&Q which we painted white and the hearth was just sandstone paving cut to size. The surround was £99 and the hearth was £25. The biggest job was removing the tatty brickwork to make room for the fire which is electric.

They are actually quite easy to remove, but they can be very heavy.

Usually it's only 2 or 4 brackets holding the surround to the wall. You just have to find them. They are buried just under the surface of the plaster. They hearth likewise moves away quite easily if you can wedge something behind it and lever it away.
