Bathroom Flooring

Hi all,

I have some lino installed in both my en-suit and main bathroom but I hate the stuff. I have been doing some research on the best type of flooring for bathrooms (where there is a high chance of water contact) and LVT seems to be a favourite.

My question is, does anyone know if this is as easy as laminate to install? And are brands like Karndean and Amtico a selling factor or should I choose something that is less pricey but just as good?

From everything i've heard its click flooring so it should be just as straight forward as laying laminate flooring which is a good sign, as for brands to be perfectly honest with you paying more doesn't mean its better, i would go for mid range or just go for whoever has a design you like and can actually feel or see in person so you can see the thickness and the details in the top layer

Thank you for your reply. We've been doing a lot of research and found another type of flooring called SPC. According to an article we found, it's very similar to LVT so we have ordered a few samples the Bentley and a few samples of Karndean and Amtico to compare quality. I'll keep you posted on what we choose.

I‘m assuming it’s a suspended timber floor? You do have to take into consideration movement in timber floors but this can be greatly reduced by remedial work on the subfloor and the correct floor build-up. E.g: - Sistering/replacing damaged, bowed/sunken joists - Adding noggings to stiffen floor - Replacing floorboards with T&G plywood sheeting (minimum 18mm). Ends should fall on joists, glued and screw down. - Adding tile backer like Hardiebacker or DITRA matting, the latter of which has a decoupling membrane that is supposed to prevent subfloor movement from affecting the tiles.

I remember a friend once saying black tiles showed the dirt very easily and needed cleaning more often. All the images of the dark tiles show them used with a light coloured grout which would be needed to show the shape of the tile. I would go for a hexagonal shaped tile if that is what you like. Everything dates eventually. I think a brick tile pattern is now a bit dated. I think either of the lighter shades would look great

Thanks Sonia, I really like that geometric floor, I'll have to have a search for something similar. We're keen to avoid plain as our previous house was very minimal and now in the new house we're trying to have a little more confidence with adding just a touch more character to each room.

My house is all floorboards so the kitchen and bathroom were boarded with some kind of hardboard, sorry I don’t know which, just left that to our son. He then laid porcelain tiles in the kitchen and sheet vinyl in the bathroom. Don’t believe anyone who says you don’t need to board the floor, you do. However I do have laminate flooring in my living room and that was laid over the floorboards and it has fared very well.

I have the Eternity brand of LVT fitted in my kitchen and it’s brilliant. My son has a different brand but it’s not one of the more well known and expensive brands. Personally I wouldn’t pay for a well known branded name if the cost was substantially higher.

We had ours fitted by a flooring company as it does need fitting correctly. I watched him lay it and there is a knack.

I steam mop mine. LVT is suggested for bathrooms.

Thanks for your input Daisy, Yeah I think the less known brands are just as good. We'll see what these samples are like. I do like the idea of being able to steam mop them to give them a thorough clean. I have heard LVT is a bit of a specialist floor to fit so I'll see what I can find on YouTube and maybe attempt the downstairs loo first.
