Hi, what was the length of your worktop?

This looks like a copy of my requirements exactly. I have 160cm to play with. Where did you get your sink if you don’t mind me asking?

Hello Paul,

Thanks for reaching out.

OK, this installation was a few years ago but I did a bit of digging and managed to find the paperwork.

The base cabinet is a 450mm Fusion white from Magnet

The sink is a PYRAMIS SPARTA 79X50 SS 1B1D SINK

The overall length of the space was 1740mm

You might struggle with only 1600mm

The only way I can see a work around in this space would be to use a 300mm base cabinet with an undermount 0.5 bowl sink and put drainer grooves in a solid surface worktop.

You might get away with a 400mm base but it would depend if you had any wiggle room with the appliances and if there were skirting boards etc

Dear Mark, thanks for taking the time out to follow up on my request so promptly. Where you have the tumble, I will have an under counter freezer that is 550mm (50 in the pot😀). I had a look around on Wickes earlier and there are some possibilities. This is a full house refurb carried remotely from here in Bahrain. The old downstairs toilet is the new laundry room. We will be home to Wales in April to hopefully put finishing touches. Stay safe in Scotland.

How about making a concrete worktop. This isn't beyond the ability of a fairly competent DIYer. There are lots of YouTube videos to help and the worktops can be practically any colour and add a personal touch. The materials are extremely cheap. We have recently made concrete tops for within our larder to see whether is really as easy as it looks, and are delighted with the results.

Hi Bry R! Choosing a kitchen worktop is a very personal choice where a couple of factors come into play. You will need to consider and prioritise: budget, look/feel, durability, usage/sensitivity. Leaving budget out for a second we reviewed your 3 materials Quartz, laminate and concrete for you: Quartz - Beautiful stone that can be used anywhere, even near the hob and sink. On the durability side, it is a very tough stone ( especially in composite form) that is more durable than many other natural stones. Also potential scratches can be sanded out if needed! Very easy to maintain. Concrete - It looks amazing. But in our opinion, a kitchen is more practical than just an aesthetic feature… but this is very personal! Concrete is more sensitive to staining of food and water. So either you need to use a food-grade sealer, get out the chopping board, or order takeaway! Concrete can also be sensitive to scratching. Last but not least given that it is heavy, you might need to rethink about your cabinetry for reinforcement. Laminate - Very flexible and can be used for all surfaces. Can also mimic any natural materials you like ( even concrete!). It is very sensitive to heat and you cannot test your vegetable cutting on it! But apart from that it is pretty resistant to stains and chemicals. Its cost even allows you to change the look of your kitchen with just changing the worktop in couple of years time, without breaking the bank. If your budget stretches it, we would advise the quartz unless you love the look of concrete and you don’t mind giving a bit more care and love to this stunning beauty in your home! Putting white or light grey on a kitchen floor is asking for martyrdom - fine if you're what Freud called a housewife psychotic; but if mopping your floor three times a day isn't your thing, go for a darker floor and get your reflected light from the vertical surfaces of the island. I would also be wary of white next to cream - call me old-fashioned, but it's one of the few combinations that simply jars. Have you considered having a bold and bright colour for the island as a counterpoint to all that tastefully restrained grey, black and cream?

You could go for any colour really, as the units are neutral and so is the floor. Granite and Quartz come in many shades, but I think the lighter shades are nicer and easier to live with. I can’t see your samples very well as they are reflecting too much light. I also like the green organic looking shades, see below, but whether you will tire of them is another matter! I have cream units too with an oak worktop. They do have to be re-oiled every 3-6 months but that’s no real hardship. However, granite is much tougher.
