hallway help please

Help please. What would you do with this hallway. Im terrible at interior design. Im thinking of replacing the blue box with a bench with wicker baskets to store shoes.

I dont know what to put where the mirror is currently sitting. Something for coats would be ideal practically. However, we do have some under stairs storage so we can make do with that at push. Im wondering if a console table and smaller mirror might look nicer. What would you do if it was your hall? Just no idea what would look best. Also, struggling with colour for whatever furniture i buy. I don't want grey, white seems boring and i have too much white but dont think a darker wood would go?

Any suggestions appreciated thanks.

Where is the white cupboard situated (the one that I can see a pink flower behind) in relation to the door? Does that hold meters? I would be tempted to increase the size of that cupboard all the way across the alcove and put the shoes in there. They are then hidden. Replacing a box for wicker baskets still leaves them all on show. I would then put the mirror above it as that's close to where you walk in.

Enclosed under stairs storage is now becoming very popular so it's an ideal place for coats and bags (even shoes).

Thanks for your reply. Yes the cupboard holds the meters. Not sure if i could increase the size of the cupboard as i dont have the diy skills or budget but i could get something that looks similar and is a similar size to go next to it.

Thanks for confirming it would probably be better to keep the coats under the stairs.

This is what i had in mind to replace the blue shoe box otherwise that area would be bare:

Goodie on the lamps! Don't get me wrong, I love a mirrored table, I just don't think it is doing all it can in that spot. They are great in a bedroom and also in a dark corner in a living room. I'm sure you can find the perfect place to show it off. I don't usually like radiator covers either, but sometimes, and in the right material, they can work well. Go with a shelf mounted above it if you are unsure, but because your front door (more on that later) has those wonderful vertical lines in it, you could have a radiator cover with the same long slats. I think your door is great - it has strong but simple features, that I thought fit with your clean line aesthetic, while letting in light. I may be against the grain here, but unless your house is incredibly drafty and it is a 16th Century cottage or a French chateau, I wouldn't dream of having a curtain across a door. Call me crazy, but our last house was a wonky Victorian with a beautiful, enormous front door with stained glass in it and around it and the wind used to come in so strong around the edges that I felt like I was in the Arctic Circle, but there wasn't a chance I was going to cover up such a beautiful piece of architecture. Yeah, that is a bit crazy.... You could paint it in a cream to match the rest of the house, but make the other changes to the entrance hall first, live with it for a while (next year, as you say) and then see if you still want to paint it. I'll go and look for something for the floor now while other people tell you I'm wrong on the door curtain idea!

You could get a radiator cover like this: But I don't think you really want one. Why not have a carpenter build a console that is custom made with the dimensions you need or a shelf that is mounted above the radiator? Decent radiator covers aren't cheap and if it isn't what you want, get someone to build what you do want. If you are going to paint your door (which I don't think you should, but I am in the "no door curtains" club), have it or shelf or console in white. If you aren't going to paint the door, having it (whatever "it" is!) in a dark wood but also have a small table (under the giraffe shade) in wood, too. I hope you start to think it is exciting again soon. Maybe look around at magazines or Houzz for entryways you really like the look of for some renewed inspiration.

Very much like my hall (almost identical except ours is 1922 and thus the detail is a tad more Edwardian in influence) ! I've added a wall light on the wall going up the stairs and matching pendants from Fritz Fryer and added a plain paper from Zoffany (called 'silk plain') . Thus the basic scheme is very plain and layered up with artefacts (tables, hall chair, paintings). I've added mirrors to throw light around the place..and am hunting for a distressed antique one to go right at the top of the stairs facing you. It looks as though your stairs go to left and right too... so adding the mirror will I think create more light and ambiance in that rather dark junction. I do agree that it would be lovely to have the stained glass replaced in the door. I added full door curtains with a upholstered pelmet over the door which makes it look much less stark (personally I don't think the little shelf at right adds anything and I'd remove it ;( ). . I chose an embroidered linen from Sanderson for the curtains and used the same fabric for the landing window and hooked that back with a French swan neck holdback and they were hung from a brass reeded Jim Lawrence curtain pole which goes very well with the Fritz Fryer lighting fitments. It's still work in progress as our beautiful carpet had to be removed due to allergy and we're still trying to get the best result on the oak floor in the hall. Be lovely to see what you do given your layout is so similar! :)

Hi. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... How big is the area where the bench would go as it’s hard to tell? i might be tempted to add coat hooks to the left of the window there

The front door looks nice, maybe you could paint it to add some colour?

I would probably add patterned roman blinds hung outside of the recess so as to minimise light blockage. I’d probably just add art to the left of the other window as the recess doesn’t look deep? Or woven baskets or hats etc

Here’s another option for a bench, you could a cushion and throw for texture

I love the green you’ve used but I think rather than highlight the cupboard I’d either paint the stair wall in it or the door white personally

Hi @HU-130346149 Adding a mirror always helps to bounce the light around. You could opt for roman blinds on the outside of the window as this will allow more natural light in rather than on the inside. Roman blinds also look smart and work great for a hallway.
