Bed position ideas

Hi all

I would appreciate any advice on which side to position our bed. The current position in the photo allows us to put fitted cupboards on the opposite side wall-to-wall. However this also means you will see the bed as soon as you enter and it is a slight squeeze as between the wall and bedside table (approx 650mm diagonally). The only alternative is to put the bed on the opposite wall but then have fitted cupboards which stop unnaturally. Not sure how that would look as you enter the room…

We can’t seem to make up our minds on this one!

An you redesign your ensuite so that the door is on the left when you enter the room? That would free up the wall oposide the windows for the bed, wardrobes along left wall.

hiya, so the only other real position option is for you to do a 180 with the bed and go the other side of the room. Now i know that would mean as you said for the built in wardrobes to suddenly stop towards the door which you were'nt sure about so i did find some images to give you a visual. Naturally this is entirely your choice but i don't think this option is too bad, you get a little more natural light. But depending on the type of doors you use and direction of sun light you might want to check this as if its at an angle to you, and you had mirrored doors you could get some sun reflection at you during summer months.

Hello, I have the same style bedroom in terms of layout, slightly a bit bigger with 3 windows on the same wall. I have built in wardrobes on the two sides of the fireplace just like where you have the shelves. Surely I had the same issue always as I can/t move the bed too much and it is in the same position as yours but I found some bedside table that fits well and is also functional. I even managed to place a mirror on the same wall. If you would move the bed where the shelves are, wouldn't it disturb you that you may lack space as the wardrobe is there too. A few photos for inspiration, with and without headboard. Also, some with curtains rather than blinds. I do think a rod/rail as high as you could get one (below the corner beam), running the whole width of the window wall would deceive the eye re: the proportions of the room. (See pics below) Does the bed you've chosen lift up from the bottom? I think any side storage drawers would be a pain. Finally, have a look on apartmenttherapy.com. If you read over a breakfast bar (sorry, no time to look properly) then you may want to be able to switch the light above that on and off separately to save lighting the whole place. Ensure that recessed lights are spaced according to the ceiling you have after you've put wall cupboards in place (tall ones flush to the ceiling also saves cleaning and you can use a slim stepladder to reach stores etc in the upper shelves) and ensure that lights are central above work surfaces so you aren't working in your own shadow. My electrician refused to believe this would be the case and we had to install a second row of lights to correct his error. I hope this helps. (You'll clock that my lights were not put in well!)

Would it work if the bed was turned 90° and parallel to the built in cupboard? Move the bookshelf towards the window and the window end becomes a play area.

I think it depends on what is more important for you, storage or the bed not being visible. A narrower bed in the current position would give you better access into the room and beside the bed. If you move the bed you have less storage and you have to walk around the bed to access the ensuite, would that be an issue? If you do move the bed then I would suggest that the side of the wardrobe facing the door is the same colour at the far wall with the window and then visually you would lose it, or hang a big picture that gives you a feature. And even though they seem out of fashion at the moment I'd go for mirrored wardrobe doors with as narrow a frame as possible so that you maximum light in the room.

I agree with moving the door of the ensuite. The door wastes one wall. Lovely to be in bed looking out through the double windows. Wardrobes to the right as you enter with a full length mirror on the end so you don't just see a blank end, but your beautiful self! Helps with reflected light, too.

If you keep everything as it is, could you have two shallow floating shelves instead of a bedside table and a wall light? You could then probably reduce the space taken up by 50% or more. If not and you put the bed on the opposite side, how about the end of the wardrobe being an integral shelving unit for books and decorative bits and pieces? Moving the door of the ensuite would make a lovely view from the bed but I'm not sure whether you could put the wardrobe on the left hand wall and it would mean reconfiguring the en-suite.
