Renovating Dining Rooms Kitchens

Kitchen/diner or not?

Is the trend/desire still to have a kitchen diner or separate rooms?
Debating whether to knock through our galley kitchen which is adequate for 2 of us or not.

Open plan kitchen/dining/living spaces seem to be very popular now. I live on my own and don't regret knocking through the kitchen and dining room.

I agree with Brandi Nash Hicks, the first thing that struck me was that the table would be better the other way around. When not in use and the chairs pushed in it would allow more space on the doorside, no one would have to look at a wall and it would just feel more spacious. You could even have the narrow part up against the wall. Not sure what the TV is for, is this also going to be a sitting area? It looks far too high up on the wall. I would put any other seating so you can look outside. What do you want to use the room for? It would help if you posted photos of the rest of the room.

Melissa- hello!! lovely to see a fellow weege. definitely helps to hear that taking it out would have been the big undertaking we fearwed ( and cant afford!) sorry for you though, bet it is starting to look amazing!! are there pics? Ruth thank you I do so appreciate that and you are right once primed we might have better idea, didnt think of that. and will be keeping the idea a room needs finished in mine. and the fun part I am determined to try and maintain.... adventure starts here....!

Your house looks a similar dimension to my house which I just sold. I kept the wall dividing the receptions rooms but took the wall down between the kitchen and back reception room. Yes we needed an RSJ and all of the walls underpinning as there were no foundations. Was very costly but definitely worth it as we live in that end of the house. I think that With having an older property, costs do just spiral. I can’t remember how much the RSJ was, sorry. i think our building work was about £25000. Can you leave the fireplace in and have it open so you can see it from both sides? Then have your kitchen and dining in the current lounge and your living area where it is at the moment but open it up apart from the firePlace? We’ve left in our old exposed stone work and cleaned it up.

Knock through. We did this 30 years ago when we first moved into our current house and have never regretted it. So much more sociable.

I did just that several years ago. My 1930s house had the teeniest kitchen ever, so we knocked through to the dining room and created a much nicer space. It’s not huge but it suits us. The wall was not load bearing and my husband removed it. We had a budget kitchen installed as well as new electrics, flooring and tiles. We blocked in the back door as we already had sliding doors and use them. Also installed a new kitchen window. This was 12 years ago and the whole thing, kitchen and all, cost £13,000. Obviously it would be more now. Although it’s not the huge open plan kitchen some people have, we love it.
