It's an awkward one, and as the comment above mentions, one that's debated often. I'd say at the very least take out the brickwork in the alcoves, it's those that date the look the most. Then render the fireplace and paint it. Painted brick never looks great, and rendering (even rough render ) looks better than not rendered. painted brick! Alcoves removed, proper hearth and rendered brickwork look.

I like the wooden beam but not so much the brick. I wonder if opting for painting the bricks may cheer it all up? Or maybe navy or dark grey? I agree the floor is very nice. Maybe adding a simple rug will add a bit of cosiness?

Remove the bricks down to 3 courses and reuse the bricks to fill in the open shelves and to raise the hearth, put a slate top and raised woodburner and either render or leave the bricks exposed ?
