I don't know what to do with my brick fireplace

I have a wall length brick fireplace with varnished wood, and a brick typre hearth

I want to paint but I don't know what colours to do?

Quite fancy sanding the wood mantlepiece down to get rid of the varnsih but not sure

open to all and every ideas

I like the floors - but wanting to paint my whole living room - so open to opinions on the living room as a whole

PLEASE HELP
