Don't know what I'm doing here

Hi,
We'll my kids are just about old enough to not break everything & so we have finally decided to do something with how horrid our living room + dining room look. I'm open to any suggestions... Paint, rug, paintings, plants whatever. My wife & I do not have a knack for design in any way whatsoever so please be any tips would be appreciated. The protector screen goes up by the way. There's a 42inch LTD behind it.

Hello,
I think you're not getting any suggestions because you haven't given people enough to work with. I've had a look through your idea books and you certainly have an interesting sense of colour, so it'd be an interesting challenge and I'd like to help, but there isn't really enough information at the moment.
- Could we have some photos during the day, with the blinds open? The light isn't good here. Do you have to keep your blinds shut all the time or are they open during the day?
- You say you hate your room, but what exactly do you hate about it? Is there anything you do like?
- What do you want to keep the same? I'm guessing at least some of the furniture, though perhaps the coloured cushions on the sofa could be re-covered? What's the floor made of, and could that be repainted or could you afford to replace it? How about replacing the blinds?
I have some interesting ideas for what you could do, but would like to see some better-lit photos and more information first please.

In response to your questions, I opened the blinds and took pics in the daytime. However unfortunately because my building is in between 2 high rise buildings, we don't get a lot of light in. The windows in the house might have a slight tint also to prevent the neighbors from looking in, If need be, I can have that replaced to create more light.
We do tend to keep the blinds closed for the most part. But that's also because It doesn't seem to make a difference much when we open them.

What do I hate about it? Well I feel we failed at what we wanted to achieve. I wanted something contemporary with a nice mix of bold colors accomplished either with the wall paint or by proper accessorizing. We unfortunately started off on the wrong foot. We painted the house first without having a proper direction, and it was downhill from there. It doesn't have the wow factor you feel when you walk into a well designed room with properly matched colors. Im not crazy about the wall colors or the color of the furniture. I am open to changing the fabric colors or replacing them if need be (last resort).

What do I want to keep? Im open to anything. I love my reclining chair + projector/screen. Would like to keep that.

When we moved in, the floor had green tiles. But because of the kids, we went with a black carpet. We have no center rugs. I am open to replacing the carpet to a different color. The blinds were recently installed about 4 months ago. We had curtains before but took them off because they attracted too much dust.

I have added you to my ideabook that has a bunch of pictures of the living + dining room. I am excited to hear what your ideas are. Looking forward to your response.

Curtains look neutral as does the carpet. Personally I would keep these to start with and paint the walls a mid grey which might sound bold when originally you wanted white but it will be broken up a lot by the windows and kitchen. If it is possible to get rid of the peninsular the kitchen will feel less imposing. Since the kitchen is open to the living room I would be trying to find a cupboard elsewhere to house this although you can get washers with a timer which you can set when you go to bed and they finish as you get up in the morning. Rectangular dining tables work when you have a straight wall perhaps a circular table would be better here. I would use masking tape on the floor to help visualise furniture placement. Try putting a sofa in the middle of the room, with the side to the front door and it facing the opposite corner to the kitchen.

I'd have to say stay away from silver as I think it will clash with both the floor and the furniture, which are neutral tones. A light oak curtain pole and pale neutral curtains with a natural material if you're going to go with the curtains. These are a similar colour to the furniture, a shade or two lighter to lift the room, but should work well with the blue of the wall and the floor and the furniture. curtains 2 Go You could also have the curtains, just for show and couple them with Roman blinds in the blue, which I personally think would look amazing. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, from not knowing where to start I've got lots of good ideas ... and would still welcome more. Just so you know the canvas above the glass table in the hallway is actually wired with LED to light up - it's an Arabic scripture reading "God bless this house and those who enter" which was an important feature for us to have ... so I'm afraid it's staying lol! I love the idea of black and white prints going up the staircase ... but it's all starting to look a bit too grey toned in the hallway and would like to inject some colour but at the same time it needs to complement the flash of turquoise in our canvas without clashing .... herein lies the problem for me whereas someone else I'm sure can effortless throw complimenting and colourful accessories in! I tried putting a plant on the glass table and it looked a bit odd to me ... maybe an orchid in a colour that will go with the turquoise ... which will then also have to complement the artwork on the stairs ....!! Dilemmas!!! lol
