Comments (44)HiTino Felly, Marie Here. Your off to a great start - but you've made a common mistake in that you've found your inspiration for your colour palette, but your not committing to it. You need to bring the greens and blues up onto the walls and onto the floor - commit to it. You could: - add a great throw rug underneath the bed, - add big table lamp beside the bed - or better yet, a wall sconce, - drapery isn't really the best choice for this bedding - I would have brought in a bold graphic print here, in either the blue or the green - artwork can stay neutral - even do a collection of mixed metals in chrome, gold, and have fun with that - if you add too much in the blue and green it becomes boring and un-special. Choose your accessories carefully, I'd change out your drapery - go with something bolder, I'd also get a larger night stand so you could put a proper table lamp there. Good Luck!...See MoreDon't know what I'm doing here
Comments (2)Thanks for your response mayfly182. In response to your questions, I opened the blinds and took pics in the daytime. However unfortunately because my building is in between 2 high rise buildings, we don't get a lot of light in. The windows in the house might have a slight tint also to prevent the neighbors from looking in, If need be, I can have that replaced to create more light. We do tend to keep the blinds closed for the most part. But that's also because It doesn't seem to make a difference much when we open them. What do I hate about it? Well I feel we failed at what we wanted to achieve. I wanted something contemporary with a nice mix of bold colors accomplished either with the wall paint or by proper accessorizing. We unfortunately started off on the wrong foot. We painted the house first without having a proper direction, and it was downhill from there. It doesn't have the wow factor you feel when you walk into a well designed room with properly matched colors. Im not crazy about the wall colors or the color of the furniture. I am open to changing the fabric colors or replacing them if need be (last resort). What do I want to keep? Im open to anything. I love my reclining chair + projector/screen. Would like to keep that. When we moved in, the floor had green tiles. But because of the kids, we went with a black carpet. We have no center rugs. I am open to replacing the carpet to a different color. The blinds were recently installed about 4 months ago. We had curtains before but took them off because they attracted too much dust. I have added you to my ideabook that has a bunch of pictures of the living + dining room. I am excited to hear what your ideas are. Looking forward to your response....See MoreDon't know where to start
Comments (2)Start with a competent concept planner - who will look at the floor plan and make suggestions ! If you are thinking of knocking down walls then a structural engineer might be needed, together with a builder . Usually the home owner gets the builder in first, to see what's required then he/she liaises with the SE to work out exactly what can and can't be done. Then your builder will let you know what's possible and approximately how much it will cost.If your property is more that two floors high then you can't open the stairs, due to fire risk . Then you need to keep a fire door'd hall around the stairs to protect them ... If you are thinking of external changes too, then an architect would be a good idea, as its lots more involved and Planning Dept comes into play too - but with internal changes its buildings regs monitored to keep standards and safety high then when it's complete they will sign off the work. If it's not done properly they won't sign it off and you will have problems if you try to sell the property - so it's worth having a proper, and safe, job done ! ...if you add your floor plan here and add a bit more info - ie number of floors etc - I will take a quick look for you, on my break this afternoon ! Just finishing my lunch break now - so won't be back on Houzz till later !...See MoreIdeas to complete living room.
Comments (24)Marie, your room looks lovely. So nice to see a nice blend of new and old and interesting. I agree with the others to keep your fireplace. I am not a huge fan of grey but I see what you mean about the wall on either side of the chimney ... have you considered continuing the wallpaper across that whole back wall? The slightly darker background would also help the TV to blend into the background. You could also do something a little different and pick up one of the other colours ... a warm light green to suit the wallpaper would add some more life to the room (grey by definition is a 'flattening' colour re light etc. think if grey in nature ... heavy dead things ... mainly rocks/minerals ... good for grounding a room but not too much of it ... I'm not one for trends.) Grey and wood/brown are not great together so I would change the TV stand or paint it. I love the raspberry colour of your sofa, seems a shame to add more grey. Also a lively colourful rug and some original artwork on the walls will make it less matchy. It helps to add in some small flashes of random colours ... either in artwork, accessories or cushions ... a bit of pattern. With regards to 'lightness' also remember to balance the volume and age of things. The curtains look solid and quite heavy, the fireplace is solid as is the black furniture ... the chairs and table as they are off the floor as such, look lighter, the fire surround and light furniture covers also are lighter so it's a nice balance. When I bought new sofas I chose ones with legs rather than the type that went to the floor and it made the room look much bigger and lighter. You need both light and heavy / new and old ... antique/vintage/older furniture that's 'lived' tends to ground a room and new furniture lightens it so a balance of both works well. Have fun, and remember to post after pictures!...See MoreEmmanuelle
