Colour scheme ideas for long rectangular bedroom

I'm looking at redecorating my bedroom, which is quite long and rectangular having originally been two separate bedrooms (it was already combined into one when we bought the property).

Not really looking to make any big changes to layout, but finding it difficult to decide on a good colour scheme given the almost full wall of wardrobes. I'm very keen to paint these, as the whole space is pretty much a 'beige box' right now, but they take up a large portion of the wall, so worried any colour I choose might overwhelm the space.

Does anyone have any thoughts? The bedroom has a window on each short wall - the one nearest the bed gets lots of nice warm light through from morning to late afternoon, so I'm looking to really make the most of this. However, I've tended to lean towards 'cooler' colours elsewhere, like greys and greens, so feeling a bit out of my comfort zone!

I would change the carpet and keep the wardrobes as I consider wood as a neutral. Besides the carpet looks bumpy and a weird change of color

What about going a lovely dark colour, like dark green? Make it cosy. Put a big rug below your bed, some art above. I'd change the carpet too. If you have room, move your dressing table over to the wall opposite your wardrobes so you have access to the window. Put the same curtains up at windows either end. I'd leave the cupboards maybe easier to paint the walls or if you're still keen to paint them try a contrasting colour to whatever wall colour you choose. Some ideas below. Hey Jonathan. Great view. I think your choice of colour depends on what you are going for and what else it has to work with- So the look will kind of depend on what else is going in room- for instance I could see a sawn wood floor, lots of natural linen soft furnishings and some brushed nickel accessories. I think this would go really well with a soft white. If your intention was to add some patterned fabric to the main room to continue the wallpaper theme, a beige carpet and an ornate bed then I think a stronger colour for the walls than the illustrated neutral would be better. It sounds to me that the room needs some pattern and the wallpaper idea will sort that. If you are trying to avoid florals there are lots of geometric or retro patterns you could consider. You then likely need an additional accent colour and the earlier comment is right that pink goes very well with navy- but so do most other colours- in my opinion the navy is such a strong choice the accent should perhaps be a softer pastel colour but teal, white, coral, and brassy golds also contrast.

Your bed seems perfect for a nice soft romantic look, I would go for a floral paper behind bed (Raipur floral from wall paperdirect) is romantic but bang on trend colour wise, if you could, put fitted wardrobes along the wall behind the door, move your dresser to the alcove where your wardrobe is now, maybe invest in some drawers for under the bed also, storage seems a bit of a problem, and I would go with maybe stiffkey blue paint for the rest of the walls. This will give a nice cosy atmosphere to your room. A place to go and unwind. You could you white and silver accessories for that fresh feeling too. Nothing like crisp white bed linen. Moodboard

Hi there,

May I add to the comments with a proposal as your question reminded me of a project I'm currently working on.

The reason I feel you may find that you may feel you're out of your comfort zone is that it's best to start with a moodboard so you can begin with how you want to feel in the space.

I create a moodboard like this for my clients based on how they would like to feel so it flow s and has a cohesive look. You'll avoid expensive mistakes in choosing the wrong paint or furnishings if you have an overall idea of what you'd like to achieve on paper before you start.

I agree with what the others have suggested that using a green on the walls and having a large rug.

If you brainstorm some words like those shown above and create a board like above you'll see it all come together.

I'd add a mirror to reflect the light to the middle of the room.

Add texture with a throw at the end of the bed, cushions.

Add plants, large rug ( as suggested).

New carpet or wooden floor boards.

I'd leave the wardrobes if you can for now, but if you really want to paint I'd blend them into the same colour of the walls so they don't stand out. You can do this by having them in a lighter shade of the wall colour.

Exciting having such a large space.
