It is small but if that’s all you have then you have to use it and make the most of it.

When buying wall units buy those at 900mm high as opposed to the usual 720mm high so you can get an extra shelf in them for storage. Same for the fridge/freezer unit if that is integrated.

Is this the only room an interim kitchen could go in? What about the original kitchen or the living room?

What you've got so far looks like a good way to go. If you can also have worktop over the washing machine that will give you a bit more useable space. For cooking you could add a plug in hob, a microwave, air-fryer or instant-pot, kettle and toaster and be able to cook most things. Continue your wall units over the top of your fridge, the full width of the wall and make use of the full height of the walls. You could add glass shelves in front of the window and keep drinking glasses, glass bowls etc, there so you still get the light coming through but they don't take up the cupboard space. It looks like you might have a tall slim space left over to the side of the fridge. You could get a slimline metal larder storage unit on wheels that could pull in and out from that space for storing all the pantry items. That will fill up the space to the max...

Or you could think through what are the minimum things you need to enjoy eating and box up everything else and store it out of the way and focus on keeping the space as minimal as possible. Be ruthless! Add in a few things that you love like a painting, a plant, whatever will help you enjoy the space so it doesn't feel like hardship.

it's a great idea to make a space that will work for you for the next few years while you get the bigger permanent kitchen that you will love. This way you won't feel too pressured and you can take the time you need to get your new kitchen just right.

A few suggestions:

1. Go for a slightly larger single bowl sing to which yu can add a removable drainer, chopping board etc. to maximise usable workspace
2. You can get excellent, inexpensive 2 ring induction hobs - either to mount into the worktop, or as a "plug in" countertop item.
3. Consider a microwave/grill in a wall unit, and go for a range which offers deeper wall units (350 rather than 300mm such as those from Mackintosh or German brands).
4. Either go for tall wall units (900 instead of 720, say) or you can go for extra-deep "top boxes" like the image below:

Where is your oven and hob?

@Daisy England Hi Daisy. As it's temporary I'll probably try to make do with an instant pot and plug in counter top hob etc, not ideal!

Glass shelves in front of the window is genius! It's obscured glass anyway as its a side facing window so it will slightly obstructing it is no problem, something like this would be fantastic:

I'll look into filling the walls with deep units and will look to put the microwave at least in a unit.

Bit of a mundane question, but I'm considering having the door open outwards (into the hallway) so I can use the space near the entrance better. Is that a big no no? I can't remember seeing that done before.

If you haven’t already got your cooking appliances l would seriously look at an air fryer. l can’t remember the last time l used an oven. They’re quicker and much cheaper and meat and fish taste much nicer. If funds will run to it look at a Ninja as they have different settings such as air fry, roast, reheat and bake etc.

Amazon sell stands for them so you could place it on the stand to free up the worktop space. Can’t recommend them enough.

I would recommend the Ninja Air Fryer too. Get the biggest you can afford as the smaller ones don’t cater for more than 1 1/2 people! It will replace an oven and a grill and just plugs in, although they do take up a fair amount of workspace. They make fantastic cheese on toast for that essential snack! And yes you can roast a small chicken even in the smaller version.

Once you have used the air fryer you will hardly use your oven so you will still use it when you get the real kitchen built. It’s a very misleading word (fryer) because overall it’s a much healthier way of cooking as you require virtually no fat at all to cook with.

I’ve cooked: beef, pork, chicken, salmon fillets, fish fingers, chips, jacket potatoes, stir fry, scones, victoria sponge and roast potatoes very successfully in mine to name but a few. Hubby likes sausage rolls and Iceland sell frozen packs which he says are lovely and are cooked in 12 minutes.

Haha, I haven't used my oven since getting an air fryer in January. Much easier to clean 🙂

I read all the comments on air fryers, which have certainly taken off in the last couple of years, and feel compelled to draw your attention to the fantastic Samsung dual flex ovens, which incorporate in to a standard oven size a splittable cavity (allowing two different temps & cooking methods at a time), air sous vide and air fryer all in one unit - together with steam in some models too!
