Rectangle Living Room - New Layout Help
Hi all,
I really fancy a change to my living room layout but stuck for ideas.
I've considered extending the house but also exploring options if I choose not to.
Top left is a TV stand with 55" tv and this is where all connections are. I could move it up and down the same wall or turn at an angle.
I have recently brought a soundbar with rear speakers so ideally trying to implement these in as well but not essential.
The other pieces of furniture shown are stacked tables / book cases which can easily be moved - the bottom left one is floor to ceiling height.
There is also a square coffee table on the rug.
Where it says 10'7" there is a radiator on the wall.
Also worth noting that the doorway to the bottom right doesn't have a door, its just an opening and that the french doors are in a little bay - see house plan.
Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoAre you open to replacing some or all of the furniture? And would you be comfortable sharing photos of the room?
If keeping your furniture, I think you pretty much have the best layout for that room. I'd try to centre the TV across the sofa, and flank it with the bookcases.
The rear speakers could go on side tables at both ends of the sofa.

Comments (19)That is a tricky one! I would create the tv area on the right hand side (as per image). So the tv on the wall to the right as you come out of the dining room (not necessarily hung on the wall) with a console table/cabinet on the adjacent wall. I would then have a corner sofa facing the tv under the window with a small coffee table creating a square. I'd have a chaise or contemporary lounge chair in front of the bifolds positioned about 4ft in front. I'd add an arc lamp over the chair (on the right hand side as you look at the pic) and have something like a cowhide rug with an unusual shape in front of the chair so you're bringing items into the middle of the room. Add chairs either side of the fireplace, could also add a table and rug. Finally a sofa in front of the stairs with a bookcase or cabinet in front of the radiator on the right. Comments (9)Due to the length you can't really create one large seating area that feels joined correctly as the space between people would feel incorrect (uncomfortable). I would either create a seating area at one end centred around the TV area and one the other say more centred on a cosy fire place and maybe games. Or create one fairly large area for seating - that uses the 'square' area of space - and then at one end behind this area create a study area and bookcase. This will create your square area and feel comfortable. If you have difficulties with this and would like help we would do this as part of a single room redesign for the space where lighting, layout, styling and flooring are all thought about together to create a unified and beautiful space that suits your needs. Comments (3)Hi there, Looking at your layout and depending on how many people will be seated I suggest looking into corner shaped sofa along the long wall closer to the window so that you can set up a TV on the opposite wall and get the most out of your space. However it does mean you may lose a little bit of the light from the doors. Alternatively you could have a 2 seater sofa and an armchair where your cupboards are to hide it a bit and still give you plenty of seating. For your dining table I suggest to keep this closer to the kitchen. From the floor plan I don't think you will be able to have a very large table so if you do plan to entertain I suggest to buy an extending dining table. I am not sure how far the kitchen comes, if it is beyond the door on the opposite wall? Then I would suggest to going for a two seater sofa instead. Comments (8)Where are your power points? The vast radiator covers seems the natural centre of the room to refocus the interest, so reorganise around that point with TV flat on wall. Conversation sofas either side could balance the room and make it more intimate or placing an L/corner sofa parallel to the existing radiator could provide you with a frame if the access to other rooms fron the front door is through this room. Currently all furnishing are pushed into the corners. You can easily move some power points and sky points and conceal the cables. Reinstating a fire place if the chimney brest has been removed can be a big job. You will be restricted to an alternative heating source, so any solid fuel burner could be expensive without an existing flue/chimney. You would be looking at electric wall mounted solutions or faking it entirely with a mantel/fire/hearth, so this then becomes a styling question for you....See More- 3 years ago

I have attached some pictures below - please excuse the mess, last night i was playing around with different options and i haven't had chance to tidy up again yet.
Yes i would be open to replacing some furniture.
The extension would be to get more space generally and to add another bedroom,. not just a result of my living room design. I'm currently exploring that / checking the market for other options.
@Caldicot Kitchen & Bathroom CentreInteresting idea - i am certainly planning to reduce how many accessories I have in that room including on the display stand / bookcase. Do you have any examples i could see a picture of?

I did try moving the sofa at an angle last night and moving the TV into the bay corner but it was tight to get round the sofa and I couldn't look past the tv being partially into the bay.
