Where should the skirting come to?

We've had some chimney breast work done. Tv will be in this space on a low wooden cabinet/shelf. The whole room needs skirting board after plastering but what do we do here? Stop at back wall and not put any on chimney or take it all the way around? The room will be carpet.

Traditionally it would go round but it depends how you’re finishing it? If modern, I’d probably not

Are you in a cottage, and is the floor the finished floor? If it's an old house then it's perfectly in order to have no skirting as it's actually difficult to get a good join between skirting and wall when walls are uneven. The difficulty comes if you want to carpet up to plaster, but with a hard floor it's fine. I like it as it is in the photo. Just try to make sure the junction between skirting and no skirting is out of sight.

Whether or not to use a valance is dependent on the style of bed and the room it's in. I'm about to make up gathered valances for a client in a colourful fabric by Voyage Decoration. It will soften the hard lines of the wood bed frame and add lots of colour to the single beds. The same fabric is being used for the gathered valance on the large angled bay window. This Edwardian room can take the large areas of pattern and will benefit from the frilliness. In another room, I've specified a plain valance in a dobby weave with pleats at the corners and in the middle of the long sides of the bed. The room is elegant but simple. In another, more contemporary home, I've used upholstered bedsteads so no valances were required. Incidently, in the USA what we refer to as a bed valances is known as a dust ruffle. Yes it catches the dust, but throwing the valance in a washing machine quickly solves that problem.

You have plastic skirt and arch in caravans. Perhaps they used this originally to save painting as it's supplied in a finished state (unless you don't want white). I'd replace it using either timber of MDF. Removing a window sill shouldn't create much mess. Perhaps some adjoining plaster will come off with it but that can be patched up.

Re infills - I meant if they remove the skirting and you had some spare flooring, you can put small pieces in to cover the larger gaps. However they would have to be glued in place as they might not stay put being so thin. Also need to leave the expansion gap still so it might not be worth it. I think get some ideas on weighing up the cost of buying thin profile beading to match the floor to put around all the skirt or, look to replace the skirting with a thicker one. Beading looks fine and no one will know that you didn't just put the floor down after the skirting was already there. At least it will be uniform. Beading isn't cheap though so get a price for both

With mine the skirting carries on in front of the side pillars but not within the fireplace, if that’s any help!

Thanks for the photo Sonia, that's really helpful. We have decided to do the same. Annoyingly the recess couldn't go as far back as we had anticipated due to structural issues so our current tv cabinet will protrude into room by quite a bit. We will give it a go and see how it looks sticking but we may end up changing to a built in shelf for the TV if we don't like the unit sticking out. Living room getting plastered on Monday so we're at least a week away from being able to get back in there. We won't be decorating for some time yet as need to concentrate on getting the extension kitchen ready as we're on a deadline.
