I think having tartan cushions and a tartan rug is a bit much (sorry!). The sofa is a sort of milk chocolate and I wonder if blush pink velvet would be cosy and not clash too much? Something like this

I'm trying to use neutral, earthy colours in the living room, but am worried about it looking and feeling a bit bland. I've bought these two throws for the couch; one will blend with the greige paint and rug and the other is a bit more of a colour 'pop', but not sure if it will detract too much from the rug.

With respect to the rug Minnie, if I turn it 90 degrees it won't be wide enough for the legs of the couch to sit on, so not sure I want to do that, it may make the room appear slightly smaller? Anyhow - would I best to use softer, plain colours and accessories for the couch, so that the eye is drawn to the rug? Should that be the focus when entering the room?

Colours can be neutral, just mix the textures and tones.

i like the cushions. I think just 1 more tartan print is ok as the scale is different. The background colour of the daisy cushion doesn’t work with the sofa on my screen however if that’s the Dunelm cushion when I look at it on their website it does work….

I’d make art the focal point although your lamp is rather nice!

Definitely turn the rug around as mentioned and if you want to keep a tartan cushion, I would either swap one out for a plain central one or two plain and one tartan. To break it up a bit.

The throw I think needs to be a different colour tone than the sofa.

Hi Rob, the key i find is to mis match patterns and not be symmetrical. I start with a 2 or 3 colour-way as a starting point, dependent on the sofa, chairs & surrounding area. The colours should be subtle accents to the main dominant colour. As an example these below would work on your sofa with one tartan cushion. As you will see I’ve used 2 colour ways only, I would probably take the brightest colour and use as a throw, on this project. I’ve used yellow/mustard, but you could use any colour preference. With the monochrome cushions I would definitely add a 3rd colour that would work with something else within that room. You’ve got this! 😊

Ps: the above cushions are just examples of how effective mixed patterns can work together.

Thanks for the comments guys! I think I will ditch the tartan cushions. Am I best sticking with plain cushions rather than patterned? Bit concerned that patterned cushions may look too much with the check rug....

I quite like the idea of a floral cushions such as one of those below, but will the patterns be too much with the rug?

I went and bought this throw too as I'd like pops of colour but I think the original neutral throw may have looked nicer. 😳 Think I may have taken a wrong turn with the blue throw. I may just put up with the couch without a throw, I dunno!.🙈

The sofa is perfectly okay. A nice soft neutral. I like Upholstered Solutions ideas. The blue throw doesn’t really go with anything else in the room. It’s just a clash. The room is a lovely neutral so use that as a guide?
