Need help with awkward kitchen layout

Hi,

I need some help trying to renovate my kitchen - it is a very narrow kitchen that measures 1.48m x 4.3m. In the current space, it houses an oven, fridge, sink, dishwasher (and a boiler on the upper level). The dishwasher is under a counter so in total that leaves me with 3 (0.6m length) counter tops - one of which is almost completely taken up by the microwave. So, in reality, 2 counter tops.

The units are around 0.6m in depth, leaving me with 0.88m space to walk, but even this space is cluttered with bins and a vegetable trolley! I want to maximise the counter space and have sufficient space for 2 people to move around in the kitchen. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Some pics would be helpful. A first suggestion would be to get the microwave off the counter. So one idea would to have a hutch set in the upper cabinets, it could be set lower for ease of access and to have a smaller cupboard above. Or rethink your cooking - an induction cooktop with a combination microwave and convection oven below.

If you don’t have one already, switching to an induction stove will help improve usable countertop space. Plus it might negate the need for your microwave as they transfer heat so quickly.

If you plan on getting new units I’d advise getting all drawers. They make a huge difference to functionality. I’d also try to fit in a pull out waste. You can get a 40L pullout in a 300mm cupboard. Also take a look at the sink you have ..is it too big? Too small? Can you fit a cover that expands your workspace?

I’d also try to get anything off your floor.. including your vegetable trolley. You could put the veggies in a hanging basket, wall mounted narrow baskets, or even mesh bags on hooks.

This is how the lounge is looking right now. Excuse the mess as we're just clearing out the understairs cupboard to hopefully put in drawers instead for shoes etc! Anyone have any ideas how we can arrange it better please? Thanks for your advice so far Minnie! The understairs bit is tiny and not able to fit much under currently. Not sure how much it would cost to remove the fireplace. It does add a bit of charcater though to a boring 80s box so i'm a bit loathed to remove it? TIA

Believe it or not, I am still in the process of designing this! Except the wall between the toilet and kitchen has been knocked out as I do agree with you all that it's a bit nasty coming off the kitchen! we will be putting a stud wall up where the dining room extension is to add the toilet and utility in there. The floorplan pretty much looks like Wumi's last one. It eliminates all the issues that you had with the kitchen Rinked. Just now trying to work out what should go where!

Thank you for all the comments! I really appreciate it. It’s great to have other inspiration to play around with. I’m not actually planning on using Wrens but their 3D virtual reality mock up is very useful! I spent the day playing around with different ideas, using cardboard in the space to mock things up, including tall units! The problem is the width of the kitchen isn’t huge so full depth units facing each other becomes a problem. I might have settled on a layout that wasn’t in my original sketches - I’m going to take it to a designer to see what they think. The only awkward bit about this design is there would be an appliance (probably the freezer) in the corner under the breakfast bar, so the only access would be from the lounge/dining side. My parents are wondering if I need the 300mm breakfast bar overhang, but I think that if I have units across the entrance to the kitchen like that, I’ll naturally want to use it as a breakfast bar and will be annoyed if it isn’t comfortable to sit at.. here’s my 3D app mock up of the space (not a professional mock up!!)

I would be tempted to take the kitchen all the way across into the current Sitting Room which will give you access into the Conservatory and garden, but by doing this would it allow you sufficient space in the current Dining Room which would then be your Lounge? If you make the kitchen/diner a big social area and have sofas in it and also perhaps in the Conservatory too then you could make the new lounge just an occassional room?

I feel your pain as my galley kitchen has little worktop and it drives me mad. Luckily I do have a small pantry. My kitchen used to be a U shape and that gave me lots of worktop for food prep and baking, why did I ever change it!? With veg, most can go in the veg compartment in the bottom of the fridge, except potatoes of course. I have a slim bin at the end of the cupboards, Eko (see below) which looks tiny but it fits a lot more than you imagine so I would highly recommend one. If you could share a pic of your kitchen it will certainly help us give you more ideas. Here’s mine and the wall cupboard on the right houses the boiler.

Could you sketch a layout just roughly so that I may offer some helpful suggestions? If you have units running down two sides (galley style) and they are 600mm deep and the overall width is 1480mm then you would have a lot less space than 880mm for a walkthrough. Please illustrate this.
