Would that damage the skirting board or can it be done without damaging skirting?

Personally I would put the radiator on the wall opposite the window. It’s a little bit of upheaval but best to do it before the carpet and furniture arrive. A radiator behind a big piece of furniture has reduced effectiveness.

Unfortunately you've gone about it in the wrong order by decorating before the plumbing for a new rad! No issue having a rad behind your sofa, nor the shown proximity to sockets. Personally I would keep with the previous size of radiator - return the one you've bought if you can, or sell it on and go back with the wide one. It'll save you the plumbing rework and time to redo skirtings/touching up paint etc.

To add to the suggestion to keep to previous radiator size, guessing you went smaller as newer radiators push out more heat. But it's fine to oversize as long as you have a decent TRV. Also the right size rad for the room might not have allowed for a sofa in front of it.

Decent thermostatic valves are a worthwhile investment in any room - it is easy enough to turn down a radiator (or off, if the room isn't being used) but adding heat to a room with undersized rads is always a pain!

Just a comment about vertical rads. I don't have any, but have been advised against them. With a tall rad half your heat is already higher up your wall than you are, and you won't feel the benefit.

We are also thinking of getting a vertical one instead of having an horizontal one behind the sofa.l but some people say they aren't as good.
