oh dear! Can you try and achieve a modern country look? Have a look at this pic. Instead of the wallpaper go for a trellis/geometric/trefoils style one. This is from thibault but there are lots around. Change the rug in the pic for a contemporary style. Change the floral cushions for modern patterned ones perhaps a mix of geometric and a modern floral. Maybe just have one sofa but have a couple of funky occasional chairs? I do love your rug but it may be a little big unless you pull it away from the hearth a foot or so and bring your sofa in the window forward 2-3 ft to sit on the rug ( also bring in the other from the wall). Does your tv fit on the coffee table? I personally would change to a wood floor as I think they always look modern but that's me!

Hi Russell. It maybe worth considering employing an interior designer for a single room redesign for this space. You can then ensure everything with in the room works and can see it all in a 3D image before you commit to changes. You will also then gain help with trade discounts on purchases which can save you in the long run. There are plenty on here to look at so it maybe worth asking around. Looking at the space can you just confirm what it is behind the sofa? you say a partition.. is that to another room? If changed to glass would it effectively be a large window pane? If so what would than look onto? Grey with the royal blue sounds like a great base for the colour scheme and then one of the other vibrant colours for accessorising the space - this would allow you to change that additional colour at a later date if required, without needing to redo the whole space. A glass centerpiece above the table sound fab and would bounce and reflect light so would visually increase the size of the room as well as being clear so not distracting too much from the view through the space and out of the back windows. You would be best - budget wise - to look for this second hand on e-bay or Gumtree for something really unique or somewhere like Wayfair maybe reasonable for you. Yes happy with them for now Carolina. Cushions are easy to change and i have learnt you can create so many different looks and styles just by changing cushions. I am sure my local cushion shop will be pleased to see me again when i get bored with them.

Thank you for all your ideas and for the lovely plans. I think I need to decide if the room will be a lounge or a diner, not both. The piano and the dresser have to stay so I will try and move the dresser to the right and place either a seating area or a dining area in the other half of the room. Trouble is when our children visit with their partners we need more seating areas and seats for dining but this is usually only at Christmas and maybe once or twice a year. Can I ask Wumi how do you do those brilliant 3D plans of the room? They are really good and will help me visualise what to do before I move heavy furniture. How can I access this software and is it easy to use? Thank you all so much for your sensible and practical ideas. I really appreciate it and its given me much food for thought. :)
