would love to get ideas from the Houzz posse in relation to colours, flooring, accessories and glass wall possibility instead of the wood partition you see behind settee. this lounge and dining room is ready for change. not a bottomless pit of money to spend so thrifty ideas welcome but don't be afraid to suggest away. colours we'd like to include are grey, royal/proper blue, lime green, possibly orange or deep pink. we also like the idea of a glass centrepiece above the fireplace.

Hi Russell.

It maybe worth considering employing an interior designer for a single room redesign for this space. You can then ensure everything with in the room works and can see it all in a 3D image before you commit to changes. You will also then gain help with trade discounts on purchases which can save you in the long run. There are plenty on here to look at so it maybe worth asking around.

Looking at the space can you just confirm what it is behind the sofa? you say a partition.. is that to another room? If changed to glass would it effectively be a large window pane? If so what would than look onto?

Grey with the royal blue sounds like a great base for the colour scheme and then one of the other vibrant colours for accessorising the space - this would allow you to change that additional colour at a later date if required, without needing to redo the whole space.

A glass centerpiece above the table sound fab and would bounce and reflect light so would visually increase the size of the room as well as being clear so not distracting too much from the view through the space and out of the back windows. You would be best - budget wise - to look for this second hand on e-bay or Gumtree for something really unique or somewhere like Wayfair maybe reasonable for you.

The partition with the doorway to its left, leads into the hall. I have posted a photo looking at this from the hall. Originally (before we moved in) this was glass at the top. I like the idea of glass bricks or a floor to ceiling contemporary glass display/window. Something whereby you cannot see through, and possibly coloured in some form. We are considering moving the door to the centre of this part of the room though serious consideration as to seating would have to change.(The photo shows what we'd like) I have also posted a photo of a glass feature above the fireplace which we like.

Is there a ball park figure in considering an interior designer? I do fully acknowledge the worth of such a professional. Another consideration could be to incorporate some wallart on the subject of dance (ballroom/latin).

Hi. Can I assume you are opening up the original fireplace to install the log burner? are you also looking at a traditional wood burner? If so, I would build 3/4 very deep shelves in the recesses either side of the fireplace for decorative items and maybe to store the logs. Get 2 x 2 seater sofas and situate them opposite each other at each side of the fireplace. I would hang the tv on the wall over the fire and have a footstool coffee table between the sofas. Given you are wanting a wood burner with a sleeper I assume you like a traditional style so would have maybe a plaid/ tartan footstool. It's difficult to tell by the photos but I would turn the dining table around and move it away from the wall if you have the space. Decorate with muted shades and accessorise with heather, moss green etc. do you have to replace the carpet if you're taking the wall down as it looks nice? Space permitting, it would also be nice to add a lamp or 2. Floor length curtains would also look nice, is that a bay window you have??

Seems like quite a lot of upheaval for not a huge gain in space. Could the two spaces be made to work better where they are? You could add base units to create a u shaped kitchen giving you more storage and a serving area (you could have shelves on the dining room side holding eg cookbooks, placemats, napkins etc) [https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/london-townhouse-traditional-kitchen-london-phvw-vp~23607821[(https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/london-townhouse-traditional-kitchen-london-phvw-vp~23607821) Bringing the range cooker forward in line with the units (building out the wall behind) would flow better too. Could the desk go elsewhere? I think this would make the dining space more inviting. I think its nicer to have a dining area looking out and opening into a garden than a cooking area. Also you lose worktop space to the patio doors, rather than a window above the sink, as I presume you have now?

Thank you for your ideas, I'm happy to live with the grey for a while and see how the room feels. Also my layout idea was the top diagram, we have a radiator cover and was going to put the tv on the wall above it, it's not a huge flat screen. Originally before I decided to open the fireplace the tv was going to go there. I like the other layout too and do have a Queen Anne, maybe we can include it in the room instead, my furniture is dark wood that I thought of painting, here's the sideboard and queen Anne chair, I do have a coffee table which my dog chewed when he was a puppy hence painting the furniture.

Hi Sandi You have a great space to work with, and a lot of ideas for the space itself which is a great start. Ideally it would be best to sit down with a Designer and really dig into what you want from the space, taking time to really figure out how you want the space to feel as a whole. However, to get you started it's easy enough to create a concept design plan of the space from plans you have of the home, so if you'd be interested I'd be happy to take a look at the plan for both the basement and lounge, and send you something over to give an idea of how the design could look / be laid out, based upon the information you've posted above. That's no problem. The glass block sound great. It really depends on the over all look you go for as to whether this would look right in the space. I love the glass above the fireplace.. it would look great and create a lighter and visually larger looking space.

Most interior designers have an hour rate or/and a fixed fee basis depending on what you are looking for help with.
