i did wonder about the rug as well being too small, i will probably go for a slightly darker one as well with my daughter being so little it gets dirty very quickly. i would love to have help professionally however i cant really afford to at the moment but thanks for your time!

Hi Sarah, thanks for your reply, i agree that the sofa with door behind it doesnt work, also not practical at all. i will a a floorplan, hopefully you can make it out okay.

I wouldn't buy anything new yet. More storage might be helpful like shelves in the alcoves with a closed cupboard below. Move your furniture around until you like the layout. Do you need both the doors for access or could you block one to give you more space? Is the tv point fixed? You need more toy storage. This could be simple Ikea. Its a lovely colour and a bright room with a really nice big window. Could the tv go in one of the alcoves to give you another wall for sofas or a chair?

Thank you for the advice. unfortunately i have tried the furniture i have every way it can go and it doesnt sit right due to the doorways, i also do need both entry ways as well. i did try just having the one sofa but then the room looked too bare. i agree about the toy storage and shelving, unfortunately my dad is ill at the moment and he usually does all our diy, i cant really afford to pay somebody to do it, but that is the future goal as i think shelving in the alcoves looks beautiful. i wouldnt like to attempt to do it myself as im not the handiest. i can push the tv stand back so that it sits straight in the alcove. i know it could look so nice if i can just get the furniture right, its very annoying.

Do you still have the chairs? Could a chair go in that top left corner where the sofa is with a floor lamp and pull the other sofa out of the alcove a little? Would that be enough seating? Perhaps a small upholstered footstool for extra seating? I agree a larger rug would definitely helpand shelves could look really nice

Hi, yes i do still have the chairs up in our bedrooms, i would have to pull the sofa out of the alcove a bit anyway if i get a larger rug as due to the doorway it wouldnt reach the sofa feet. do you think thats okay to have a gap behind the sofa like that. i dont actually need that much seating as its just me and my daughter, its only that i bought the matching pair of sofas it felt a shame to get rid of one but im realising theres obviously just not enough room for both. i might give that a try at the weekend when i have a bit more time and see how it feels. eventually if i like that i can get more of an armchair with a nice footstool. Thank you :)

Sofas away from walls tend to make the room feel bigger

I know, it is annoying, just can’t think of a layout that would work, potentially you could change the hall door to a sliding one but then you still have a sofa blocking the entrance to the door which just doesn’t look or feel right

Personally I’d try and work with the current layout as you can see out of the window too which feels much nicer

Yeah i completely agree as when i tried the sofa under the window i had a feeling of being trapped in, must be the fung shei or whatever it is. :)

Yeah i did wonder as the rug will be huge otherwise. it feels wierd but will just take some getting used to but im so glad to get the sofa out of the way of the door, that was really affecting my mood for some reason. and just a bit bare but i will add those extra bits and add a bit of colour and i think im finally happy haha! thanks everyone for the suggestions. :)

I am actually wondering if i could pull the chair forwards and put a small table and chairs there behind it as we currently habe to eat in the kitchen against the worktop due to lack of space, but thats something i can try at a later stage!

I’m glad you’re feeling much better about it! A table could potentially work, try it with masking tape first or even a sheet or whatever folded. Rugs unless bespoke are normally in standard sizes so you can do the same. I agree with Sarah due to that radiator wall you may not be able to incorporate the chair legs

Even without a table behind it, pulling the chair forward might help the layout. It would bring the chair closer to the sofa and make a cosy tv-conversational zone. It would also mean a rug wouldn’t need to be quite so large and still get the front feet of the furniture on it.

I have actually changed it round today after painting the wall it then didnt feel right. is it terrible to have the sofa in front of the doorway? i plan to get a sodeboard behind it (ive replicated with an old table for now) so that its not quite as in the way of the door. and i guess i can get those sliding doors when i can afford them. its just that every part of me says that the seating should face the fireplace wall and thats how it feels right but the door is behind it. if anyone thinks

it looks terrible ill probably just move it back and leave it that way. sorry for being so fussy, im a bit indecisive at the moment. x

I think it’s ok to have the back of the sofa in front of the door, so long as you can easily walk round it. When you have funds, or your Dads well enough for DIY, would it work to change the door to open outwards rather than into the room? It’s certainly a challenging shaped room! I liked the version with the sofa next to the radiator, but the best option is the one that makes you smile when you’re in the room. 😊

Thanks Angie, i think if i could change the doors to open outwards that would solve a lot of issues, i think my dad did mention it a while ago so i’ll ask him when hes feeling better. 😊

Late into the discussion. That is such a lovely room. Maybe add some colour with cushions and art? A bigger rug will add cosiness but you know that already. Have a look at Dunelm they are very reasonable. Storage wise you could get a dinky sideboard. I feel your pain with the doors. I have a door into my sitting room, first pic, which you walk through to get into the kitchen. The kitchen door was always in the way. Wherever it opened, in, out, to the left or the right, it just wasn’t right. In the end we took that door off! We then added new architrave to neaten it off and it is fine. By the way I like your first picture best with the chairs in the alcove. Very cute.
