What colour ceiling?

Our living room has a mix of flat and sloping ceilings. The sloping bit's great for bringing light into what is quite a deep room, but it's causing me a bit of a headache when it comes to paint choices.

We are painting the walls in F&B Slipper Satin.

We were planning to paint the ceilings white, but if we do that it will emphasise the triangular wedge above our media wall, and the same on the opposite side of the room.

We could paint both the sloping and flat ceilings in Slipper Satin as well but would that be a bit too much?

Also, the sloping bit actually makes the flat ceiling feel quite low, even though it's the same ceiling height as everywhere else in the house. So anything we can do to improve that would be welcomed.

Any advice much appreciated!!

I would be inclined to paint it all Slipper Satin. It's pale enough to wash over the whole space without it feeling oppressive. You could paint the media wall something related but slightly deeper such as Drop Cloth or Mouses Back. this is because the black TV will really stand out against a pale colour.

You could go darker with your ceiling. I have seen it done most sucessfully. Which way does the room face and what colours do you prefer? It also depends on what your furnishings are like and what sort of effect you are hoping to create. Its very difficult to decide in isolation. Are you having spotlights or a pendant light or a combination?

Hi Anthony, Thank you for your helpful reply! The Denim Drift room is lovely in the picture and I love the contrast with the white. I'm thinking of getting this Flos pendant light in Chrome: https://clippings.com/products/ic-pendant-light-169721?variation=185491 The kitchen ceilings are not that high and are divided over two levels so the ceiling lights we've looked at are often blocked by the ledge next to the light fixture. I think longer pendant lights may be too low and we don't really have any surface space for them to hover over so the sideways design of this light seems to work. We do have small built inceiling lights and cupboard lights in addition but they don't give us enough light. In the Denim Drift, would you recommend the colour in your picture or a lighter shade? I understand that they can mix it in a few shades. Bekka

I think you've had good advice. White as a base colour looks very good with pine in my opinion. Then you have endless options for accent colours depending on your children's tastes. You could let each of them choose their favourite colour and zone two areas with white the linking-theme. I have two girls close in age. I know one would definitely choose orange! And the other changes every few years: purple, green, blue, aqua. etc etc. In fact with white as a linking theme, any of these combinations work, and it's pretty easy to change cushions and plain duvet/pillow covers (e.g. from Dunelm) every so often to keep up with their views. White will definitely make it feel roomier and brighter.

That's a really good idea, thank you Claire, I've bought white cotton for the walls so I could try that on the ceiling too, it's not a massive room so if it doesn't work I could easily repaint. Colourhappy, I know many people don't like pure white, my daughter thinks it's a bit clinical on the walls in my living room, but after years of creams, beiges etc in my previous home I wanted to try it and I've found I really like it! I've found that at certain times of the day it looks great and at others not so good, my pictures show up well against it and I find it quite restful and calm. It looks best of all on a grey, winter's afternoon when the log burner, candles and lamps are lit so I'm going to stick with it until I get fed up. As your name is Colourhappy mine should be Colourshy so I would only replace it with another neutral, although the living room you showed looked nice (for someone else!) We've got slipper satin on walls and ceiling. Given the different angles and orientations and light reaction to them, each surface will look a different shade. So not 'too much' or same-y even though one colour.

Go Slipper Satin all over. It is such a soft, pale colour and it will not overwhelm the space. You can then add colour with furniture, art and accessories.

If i did slipper satin on the living room ceiling, would it make sense to do the same throughout the downstairs? Im doing slipper satin on the walls throughout the communal downstairs areas.

The kitchen/diner is a large space (7m x 5.5m) so does this colour drenching look ok in large spaces or is it best to do white on ceilings in larger areas and keep slipper satin to the ceilings of smaller cosier spaces?
