I'm with you! It looks as if the door opens against the wall? If so a wall to wall bookcase isn't going to work. Assuming it's enough storage I might look at the matching dresser to go next to the door, you can obviously display books with a couple of ornaments and hide away any study bits and dinner service. The other pic needs a bit of imagination re the fire (!) but I've seen you like ribbon fires, what about installing one in a slim chimney breast on the left as you walk in? An arc lamp over the dining table may also work for some directional light if working etc. I think you also have room to include a chair next to the window. I would just get a big leather mat for the centre of the table so you don't damage it. You can accessorise with any desk bits but also add flowers or a plant, they don't need to sit central on the table. I would get furniture protectors for the chair feet or look at a rug. I'd mark everything out in paper templates on the floor to check everything fits. It looks a great house btw, love the doors and windows!

I've recently redecorated our dining room, it is quite long so one half has a dining table which we've put an outdoor rug under, the other half has the armchair which you can see in the pic and we're going to get another plain armchair and a console table and mirror for the room. What rug would you suggest for the seating area? I'm stuck as I don't know what to call the style of the room? Edit to add: the grey armchair has now gone and the rug in the seating area is in our living room

I like your parquet flooring. You could try an oval rug or a cowhide instead of a rectangle. This would give you an interest shape and add interest. Homestyle has both of these for a reasonable price. I would be tempted to leave it bare if it was me. There is a lot going on there already and it's easier to clean.
