There is an upright piano in it, lots of shelves and toy storage, and a big rug in the middle, where we have a child-size table for lots of drawing, lego etc. We push the table out of the way, when they want to make train tracks or play Twister or whatever. The other area is part of a renovation we are currently building. We are going to make it an inviting area for homework, with zoned desk-spaces for each child. When the kids are older we expect it will become the hobby area (i.e. surface area that we don't have to clear away every time we want to eat). If we didn't have a small study upstairs, I would also be pleased to use one of these spaces as home-headquarters. i.e. with filing cabinets for all the family files that have to be kept. We are inundated with paper - re insurance, receipts, passports, medical, utilities. All very boring in my opinion but needs to be kept somewhere, just in case. Home-HQ also stores printer paper, the family printer, ink cartridges, photos, stationery, various cords and old charging devices, wrapping paper, spare cards, 'presents' for other people drawer. In our case, home-HQ is not as tidy as I would like. There are always piles of paper about this that or the other thing - generally about the kids' activities, or some building work, or ideas for a holiday one day in the future. These piles sit around for a long time, waiting to be filed. I like to have an area where they can 'sit' that isn't the hallway or kitchen. Maybe some of these ideas might resonate with you....See MoreRoom layouts and what to use the “dining room” for.
Comments (9)Hi There, Taking into consideration the general layout of the space I think that this room could serve well as a dual purpose room, converting it to a study with a play corner for the kids could allow you the opportunity to take care of your daily admin tasks while keeping an eye on the children and as they grow desk space could be made available where they can have their own work stations. Other more extensive options would include a side extension next to the kitchen which would allow you to open up the space more effectively and make use of natural light through the addition of skylights over the kitchen extension. This space could then become a family orientated living area while the front living room could be decreased in size or split in two to form a study and play room for the kids. A under stair storage space could also meet your requirements of a cloak and boot room... We hope our reply has been of some assistance in the decision making process and feel free to contact us should you require any more assistance. I'll be more than happy to advise you further. Comments (18)Hi Tim, greys are easy on the eye so they make a great base shade for rooms - on floors, walls, curtains or fabrics - plus they suit both period and contemporary schemes. The hue works well in any interior – it looks sophisticated in living rooms, it makes bedrooms feel soothing and creates a welcoming space in entrances. Have you considered teaming a grey carpet to match with the walls? From barely there silvers that wield a gentle touch – think Cormar’s Sensation’s Cape Diamond – to foggy greys that offer a timeless look (Highland Saxony in Baltic Grey) and deep charcoals (Sensation Twist in Charcoal) for a dramatic splash, there is a shade of grey to suit everyone. We’d also recommend sampling, to see how a particular colour matches in the rest of the décor. You can see and feel how the colour and texture work in the room and, very importantly, in the lighting. Comments (7)Thank you all. I’m up to my eyes with tradesmen as this is a full house Reno so days are disappearing . Hoping photos come through this time. Taken from the doorway looking towards conservatory which is the “window” . Only other windows are two small original lead lights to either side of French doors. No fireplace. Other aspects if the home will be traditional / contemporary to stay in keeping with the age and characteristics already present. Informal dining will will be in the kitchen , which will be used most. This room will be dinner parties , special occasions , so I thought perhaps a table that could extend . I don’t want garden type furniture in the conservatory but I have seen rattan chairs that look casual but definitely smart too. My problem is that I see lovely bits and pieces but I don’t think they tie the rooms together. I am hitting a blank , so was hoping that someone might have more ideas radical or otherwise that can assist. My benefit is that at present I have no furniture for either room so I have flexibility. Thank you all so much for your time. much appreciated....See Moreminnie101
